Dr. John McMahon on The Future of Force Plates in Athletic Performance

It seems like everybody and their mother is talking about force plates these days. And I’m obviously guilty of it myself…but only because I feel like force plates are the single-most impactful thing I’ve added to my coaching in the past five years. But what if you’re not a sports scientist – how do you get started? What tests should you use? And what metrics should you be looking at? Well if you’re curious at all about force plates or how to use them, you’re going to love today’s episode with Dr. John McMahon! Dr. McMahon is the Director of Research and Education at Hawkin Dynamics. He is also an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Salford, where he previously worked for more than a decade as a biomechanics researcher and educator. John has authored over 100 published journal articles and has presented his force assessment research at multiple international conferences spanning the fields of strength and conditioning, sports biomechanics, and sports science. And in this episode we’re going to take a deep dive into force plates and how to use them!   Testing should feel like part of coaching. Dr. John McMahon   12 Quick Takeaways from the Physical Prep Podcast: * Force plates provide valuable insights into athletic performance. * Start with basic tests to build confidence in using force plates. * Key tests for performance include counter movement jumps and isometric pulls. * The ODS framework helps link output metrics to performance drivers. * Athletes need to be educated on how to interpret their performance data. Communicating results to athletes is crucial for understanding. * Relative forces are more significant than absolute forces. * Tracking metrics helps refine coaching programs. * Athlete motivation and effort are key to accurate assessments. * Observing athletes during tests is essential for accurate data. * Engaging with athletes during testing enhances the experience. * Reducing the number of metrics can prevent overwhelm. * Focus on the human aspect of coaching, not just data.     Connect with Dr. John McMahon: * Force Plate Coach on IG   Related Links: * Dr. Paul Comfort on Assessing and Evaluating Force Production * Drake Berberet: The Beginners Guide to Assessing and Training with Force Plates * The ODS System: A Guide to Selecting Your Force-Time Metrics   Supercharge Your Decision-Making and Program Design with Hawkin Dynamics Force Plates! The Physical Prep Podcast Random Episode: October 2024

The last couple of weeks have been, “busy,” to say the least. I flew out to Seattle last Wednesday at 7 am, in an effort to get there and spend time with Luka and Joel before the seminar started on Thursday. (Plus, I worked every second of the way in an effort to get a few key items done…more on this at a later date). Spoke and listened to the other AMAZING presenters on Thursday. Attended the lectures all day on Friday, as well as the VIP Dinner that night. Flew home Saturday (again working the entire flight), and was home exactly 14 hours before Team Robertson packed the car and drove to Gatlinburg, Tennessee for Fall Break. So needless to say, things have been a bit crazy and I wanted to try something new for this week’s podcast. I’ve obviously done “Random” Shows before, but those have mostly been me talking about random topics, or doing Q&A shows. This one is entirely different, as I’ve chosen my favorite segments from recent episodes and compiled them all into one AWESOME super episode. So whether you’ve listened to every single episode or some are totally new, I think you’re really going to love this show. Let’s do this!   The first thing we need to do is define “What is Zone 2?” If all you’re talking about with Zone 2 is a just a heart rate range, then anything can get you into Zone 2 – a sauna can get you into Zone 2. But is sitting in a sauna going to make you a better endurance athlete? Probably not. – Joel Jamieson   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: * Andrew Paul on how he classifies and buckets his athletes. * Adam Loiacono on training muscles before movements in the rehab process. * Victoria Saucedo on the spicy knee health series she uses with her women’s basketball players. * Jay DeMayo on strength training and the overreliance on the weight room. * Charles Ashford on the biggest mistakes athletes make when bulking up. * The difference between training professional and developing athletes. * Vince Gabriele on Good, Better, and Best pricing options in your business. * Rick Franzblau on when good training adaptations go too far. * Erik Huddleston on the “co-worker”mentality of training pro athletes.     Subscribe, Rate & Share! James Collins on Session RPE, Neuromuscular Fatigue, and the Science of Training Load in Soccer

What happens when common sense fails us? Or maybe doesn’t tell us the whole story? Let me give you an example… I would assume if an athlete went out and played their most intense soccer match EVER, that they’d be more fatigued, which would increase their risk of injury, and/or would have poor force plate jumps after that match. And while that absolutely might happen – it also might NOT. So why is that? Well, that’s why we have today’s guest on the show!James Collins hails from Dublin, Ireland, and has made stops numerous stops in the MLS including Sporting Kansas City, Minnesota United FC, and the New England Revolution. And more recently, he’s become the special accounts manager for Soccer at Hawkin Dynamics, and started a PhD in Sport Science focusing on training load in elite soccer. And today, we’re going to talk about the relationship between training load, injury risk, and neuromuscular fatigue!   The best protective mechanism for decreasing injury is training hard. – James Collins   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: * James’ background and how he got started in the world of physical preparation. * How his early experiences with injuries sparked his interest. * The differences between internal and external training load. * Session RPE: What it is and why EVERYONE can use it (even without any sort of tech). * Thoughts on why the relationship between training load and injury risk is more complex than we might assume. * The best tools we have in our toolbox to protect our athletes from injury. * Can you predict neuromuscular fatigue by tracking external training loads? * Why return to play MUST be an integrated approach across the entire medical and performance staff. * Thoughts on measuring dose and response with training loads. * The power of building relationships with athletes to more effectively track and monitor training load.     Connect with James: * James on X * James on Instagram   Related Links: * Adam Loiacono on Acute Injuries, Respecting Biology and the Bell Curve of Return to Play * Matt Taberner Controlled Chaos * Franco Impellizzeri Research Papers   Supercharge Your Decision-Making and Program Design with Hawkin Dynamics Force Plates! Andrew Paul on the Art of Performance Management and the Rhythm of Life in the NBA

I’m going to be really honest here…writing the intro for this podcast was REALLY HARD. After all, what do you focus on when the ENTIRE SHOW is so freaking good? Whether it’s talking about training autonomy, N=1 training, the art of performance management, different archetypes and training buckets, or the role of pure strength and force development in basketball, there’s so much good info here I don’t know where to start. But all that is thanks to today’s amazing guest – Andrew Paul. Andrew is in his 19th year of performance training, and entering his 10th year with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA. But more importantly for us, he’s one of those guys that’s always thinking about training, performance, and how to make things just a little bit better. And today we’re going to take a deep dive into how he trains his basketball players to optimize their performance!   The name of the game is consistency in the NBA. – Andrew Paul   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: * Andrew’s background and what’s new since he was on the show last. * The power of classifying athletes to better understand their training needs. * Muscular? Elastic? Forefoot/rearfoot elastic? Lots of thoughts on different movement archetypes. * What role does pure strength/force development play with Andrew’s athletes? * The difference between “training into” versus “training away” – and why your athletes need BOTH. * What Andrew focuses on during his in-season workouts. * The Health-Performance continuum, and where most of his athletes land. * Thoughts on the current NBA big, and how his training has evolved to help support these athletes. * Why he’s put such a massive emphasis on staff development and growth. * The role flywheel training plays in his programs. * Why it’s critical to understand both the individual and the teams vision of the athlete you’re coaching. * Game day lifts: Good thing? Bad thing? Or it depends? * How his thought process has evolved the most over the past 5 years. * The role the modern day strength/performance coach plays to both the organization and its players.     Connect with Andrew: * Andrew on Instagram   Related Links: * Andrew Paul on Giving Athletes 100% Opportunity and 100% Growth * Just Fly Performance Podcast with Andrew #1 * Just Fly Performance Podcast with Andrew #2   Become an ELITE Performance Coach at IFAST Basketball Insiders! Adam Loiacono on Acute Injuries, Respecting Biology, and the Bell Curve of Return to Play

Imagine this scenario…you’re watching a sporting event, and an athlete gets injured. Maybe it’s something minor like a sprained ankle, or maybe something more severe like a hamstring pull or ACL tear. Have you ever wondered, what does the medical staff do right then? And how does that initial 24-48 hours set up the entire return to play process going forward? Well if you’re interested in how acute phase rehab blends into performance training, and then how we eventually work as a team to get that athlete back on the field, you’re going to love today’s episode with Adam Loiacono! Adam has over 15 years of experience in rehabilitation and performance training for professional and youth athletes, including reaching the NBA Finals with the Phoenix Suns and the MLS Cup with the New England Revolution. He is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and owns Loiacono Performance Therapy in Scottsdale, AZ, where he integrates sports science, physical therapy, and performance to optimize athletes’ training, recovery, and rehab. And in today’s episode, we’re going to help YOU understand the acute phase of rehab, and how to help support our AT’s and PT’s to get our athletes back on the field as safely as possible.   I’d rather tell the strength and conditioning to pull back the reins, rather than having to encourage them to do more. – Adam Loicacono   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: * About Adam and what’s new in his world. * The FIRST THING he thinks about when he sees an athlete go down or get injured in a game. * His steps or “phases” someone needs to work through when going from acute injury into return to play, and why strength is NOT the first box to tick. * How swelling and inflammation dictate the process and timeline. * The role of training muscles versus movements, especially early-on after an injury. * Open vs. Closed Chain Activities: Are one better than the other? * How an athlete’s mindset and psychology impact their rehab process. * Why training the healthy limb can lead to faster progress down the line. * The power of biological timelines in the rehab process. * How the S&C coach can play a pivotal role in helping an athlete come back from an injury. * Why building strong relationships with athletes during rehab can enhance their recovery experience.     Connect with Adam: * Adam on Instagram * Adam’s Website   Related Links: * Adam’s Previous Shows on the Physical Prep Podcast * Dr. Ebonie Rio on Strength, Springs and Rebuilding the Athletic Knee * Stacey Hardin on Purposeful Collaboration in Pro Sports * Spark Book   Stop the Frustration!
