005: The importance of self-care and recognising the signs of neglect in the elderly

005: The importance of self-care and recognising the signs of neglect in the elderly

As our Mums and Dads age, they may encounter difficulties in maintaining their independence, which in turn can sometimes lead to self-neglect.  Therefore, it becomes vitally important for them to start prioritising their physical, emotional and mental well-being through self-care practices, if they’re not already doing so.
Understanding the potential consequences of elderly neglect and learning to recognise the signs is crucial in ensuring a high level of quality of life for our loved ones.
The failure to meet one’s basic needs, such as personal hygiene, nutrition and safety can have far reaching consequences for their health and well-being.  When elderly individuals neglect themselves, they become vulnerable to various physical and psychological issues.
    IN THIS EPISODE ...
The Physio Co's Tristan White and specialist seniors physiotherapist, Karleen Scott, to unpack some of the issues that daughters and sons need to keep an eye out for when it comes to the health and wellbeing of their elderly Mum or Dad.
By understanding the signs of neglect and taking appropriate actions to promote self-care we can ensure a higher quality of life for our parents.

004: How Professor Peter Reaburn approaches his own journey of active ageing

In this episode of the Everyday Extraordinary podcast, host Tristan White, founder of The Physio Co, chats with Professor Peter Reaburn about his approach to active ageing.
This is the second in a two-part interview series with Peter, who is an expert in the science of exercise.
In the previous episode (#3), we dived into the topic of how exercise can impact and slow down the ageing process. If you haven't yet listened to that, hit pause and head back to episode three - we think you'll get a lot out of it!
In this second part of the conversation, Peter discusses his own journey and personal experience of active ageing.
Peter is a very fit 68 year-old. He's been working hard at his physical fitness, which he says also helps his mental fitness.
He's been hard at it for a long time, and shares what he was doing 10 years ago, what he is doing now, what he intends to be doing as a 78 year old, and 88 year old.
Peter encourages us to explore this topic with our parents and our grandparents, and explains how we can all use exercise as medicine to stay a living independently for as long as possible.
We hope you enjoy this interview with Professor Peter Reaburn!

003: How exercise can impact and slow the ageing process with Professor Peter Reaburn

003: How exercise can impact and slow the ageing process with Professor Peter Reaburn

Exercise plays a key role in keeping us fit and healthy as we age. Indeed, it can be a critical factor in how long a person can remain living independently at home well into their 70s, 80s and beyond.

In this episode of the Everyday Extraordinary podcast, host Tristan White, founder of The Physio Co, chats with Professor Peter Reaburn about the role exercise plays in slowing the ageing process.

Peter unpacks the key elements of exercise for elderly people: what are the differences between physical activity, exercise and fitness, and why does it matter?

Tristan and Peter also discuss how family members of an older person can get involved too by encouraging, supporting and motivating their elderly Mum or Dad to take on this idea that exercise is medicine, and with exercise, we can slow down the ageing process to help us stay mobile, safe and happy, living independently at home for as long as possible.

N.B. This is the first of a two-part interview with Peter. In the next episode, he chats about his personal experience of active ageing as a 68-year-old retiree.

Demystifying home care package (HCP) funding for Australian seniors

Demystifying home care package (HCP) funding for Australian seniors

In this episode, The Physio Co's Tristan White and specialist seniors physiotherapist, Nancy Klinko, demystify home care package (HCP) funding in Australia.
HCP funding is an Australian Federal Government initiative that provides money to people over 65 years of age, specifically to help them stay living independently at home for as long as possible.
It's a complex system and can take a long time to get assessed and then gain access to funds.
If you are a family member of an older person who might need HCP funding and services so they can remain living in their own home, you'll find what we talk about in this episode interesting and helpful.
