A podcast hosted by Robert Smythe and Rafael Mantesso, two autistic artists having fun talking about being neuro-atypical. Only when they were well into adulthood did Mantesso and Smythe learn they are autistic; Mantesso was in his 30s and Smythe in his 50s. Their diagnoses explained a lot, but it wasn't until they met that each finally had the experience of talking to someone who thought just like them. Their freewheeling conversations have helped other people, autistics and neurotypicals alike, understand more about seeing and thinking about the world differently.

So grateful I found you!

Best podcast for Autistic adults

This is a wonderful podcast hosted by two Autistic adults. They're not going to demean you and judge you or push you. If you're anything like me, you'll be so relieved to find some comfort and security in shared experience, something that is difficult for us to find with other humans sometimes.

I feel like I've tried out nearly every podcast, and I nearly gave up. Someone on Reddit mentioned this podcast to me, and it changed my life!

Most of the podcasts I tried were clearly targeted at parents, often having no Autistic people. I felt judged and pushed by many of them. For instance, a guest on one said there shouldn't be Autism hour at super markets because it teaches Autistic people that things will be catered to them. The person with this opinion was Autistic! I'd like to hear what Raf has to say about that one. ;)

Other podcasts were good but didn't really engage me, although some were interesting.

This is more what you think of when you think of a podcast, people sharing a deep and meaningful conversation. That's what's happening here, and if you're Autistic or care about anyone whom is, I think it will impact you deeply.

The hosts are two of the most interesting, multi-faceted, brilliant folks you could imagine. They have had a life and wealth of experience, trauma, thought, both diagnosed late in life. If you've been diagnosed late in life, here again, this is your podcast.

They joke about their lack of diversity (both white men), but Rafael is in Brazil. English is not his native language, which just makes him even more fascinating, because he has to use a limited vocabulary to express complicated concepts. He knocks it out of the park every time and makes me think in new ways, even just about his usage. I find myself adopting some of his interesting ways of using English! I hope he would know this is out of fondness (and echolalia!). Raf (probably wouldn't like me calling him Raf, but at least I'm not saying "Rafina"!) is a famous artist and lives in nature. He had a long route carving out his own life, and now he's happy.

Robert has done many things in life at a high level; you will wish that he could be your mentor. He (like Rafael) is full of compassion, thoughtfulness, insight. Among other things, he's been a college professor, is currently a dessert chef, ran a theater company. He has fiercely pursued his passions, again not without a share of struggle.

They both realize that not all Autistic folks are able to end up in good positions and are sensitive to that fact. They are advocates speaking for us with the full forces of their beings. They want their guests to represent the entire spectrum in all its diversity. We are still in the beginning stages, but their guests have all been fascinating.

I think you'll find just as much love, comfort, interest, commonality, and hope here as me. I listened to the current episode, reviewed, then binged every single episode. I have now written a better review, which is what it deserved. :)
