Why am I making a podcast? The best answer I can come up with is that I feel like I’ve been failing my entire life, so I can speak from plenty of experience. Sure, I was on The X Files and Californication, I wrote some books and made some music. But I also got a literal F in The New York Times. I had a high-profile divorce and a magical mystery tour through rehab. So now I want to get into the way that failure looms over all of us and really shapes who we are. What’s good about that, what’s bad about that, what’s holding us back in shame? Lots to unpack here. So join me and some cool guests from sports, tv, politics, business and beyond starting May 7, wherever you get your podcasts – and we’ll get into it.

Gabor Maté and the Reason We’re All Addicted

Gabor Maté and the Reason We’re All Addicted

This is my most personal episode so far, but it's really about the wisdom of Dr. Gabor Maté. The author, physician, and public speaker reminds us all how we sometimes become too comfortable with self-criticism and regret. We talk about parenting, collaboration, and addiction, and I leave the interview feeling a level of gratitude that I don’t know what to do with. Here’s that conversation.

    PREMIUM: Reflections on Gabor Maté

    PREMIUM: Reflections on Gabor Maté

After my interview with Gabor Maté took some surprising turns, I spent the next few days in a pretty heady place. I kept thinking about generational pain, responsibility versus culpability, and why some of my creative failures have felt so personal. Big stuff.

    PREMIUM: Reflections on Bette Midler

After my conversation with Bette Midler, here are all the things I’m still wondering about because I couldn’t find a way to bring them up, including what I wished I’d asked her about her parenting. Miraculously, no cursing ensues.

    PREMIUM: Reflections on Ben Stiller

    PREMIUM: Reflections on Ben Stiller

In this first Premium episode of Fail Better, you get to hear all the questions I wish I’d asked during my interview with Ben Stiller — questions I didn’t think of until after the interview. Typical. To the surprise of no one, this interview made me feel like a failure.

Bette Midler and the Meanest Man in Showbiz

Bette Midler and the Meanest Man in Showbiz

A long time ago when I worked as a bartender at Radio City Music Hall, I caught the second half of a Bette Midler show, and it blew me away. More than forty years later I ran into her at a restaurant in Santa Monica and said hi. I'm thrilled that she agreed to sit down and talk to me about a couple things that have gone wrong in her storied career. Tune in to hear about workplace horrors, how being self-deprecating doesn’t make me special, and what it really means to know thyself. All hail The Divine Miss M.

Intelligent!

What an intelligent and insightful host! I appreciate the premise and the candor of accepting and learning from our failure.
While the interviews are great I enjoy listening to the extra after show thoughts. The music, the authenticity… excellent podcast!

Please stop advertising

Most boring, depressing, obnoxious advertisement/promo. "Hi, I'm David Duchovny. I'm rich and famous. But I like to characterize myself as a sad loser. If you do too, come listen to my sad podcast for losers."

Why would you put these bummer promos before comedy podcasts?!

Please stop. I will never listen to your undoubtedly terrible, self-indulgent podcast.
