Joe Williams: Finding My Purpose Through Sobriety

Joe Williams: Finding My Purpose Through Sobriety

Joe Williams has lived numerous lives.
Google him and you will find out that he is an multi-sport Australian athlete and a proud Wiradjuri/Wolgalu, First Nations Aboriginal man.
But there is so much more to his story...
After succeeding in his life long dream of playing professional NRL and after a long battle with drugs, alcohol, suicidal ideations and Bi Polar disorder, Joe got sober and retired after just four seasons.
As one door closes, another opens and Joe walked into a boxing gym that would dramatically change his life.
Boxing gave him the discipline and structure that his rugby career lacked and he would go on to forge a successful career as a boxer.
From the outside everything seemed to be going smoothly, but as we have seen over and over again, going sober doesn't fix all of the underlying issues. Only doing the work can fix those!
In 2012, Joe found himself in a psychiatric ward after an attempted suicide - a day that he described as the most important day of his life.
Soon after surviving that day, Joe found his purpose which was to help people who struggle with mental illness.
Today he is an author, a motivational speaker and workshop leader who uses his lived experience and the lessons that he has learnt from the oldest living civilisation on the planet to change the lives of people all over the world.
I have no doubt his story will motivate and inspire you as much as it did me during this conversation!
    Thank you Joe!

How to Make Time Your Biggest Motivator

How to Make Time Your Biggest Motivator

Whether you are aware of it or not, Time is one of the biggest subjects within sobriety.
In the early days it seems to crawl past but its not long before the days on your time counting apps are accumulating faster than you can imagine.
The question is what can you do to make time a motivator rather than a constant reminder of it slowly slipping through your fingers.
Does our perception of time change when we go sober and is time simply a human constructed illusion?!
That's right...things get Meta this episode and Hame and Vic even quote Chaucer, Shakespeare, Dickens and very niche 1990s British TV shows!
    Enjoy!

Did Years of Drinking Damage My Brain?

Did Years of Drinking Damage My Brain?

As a society, we have had a tendency in the past to ignore a lot of frightening stats around alcohol. We just carry on getting wasted without thinking about the consequences. But is it time we started tuning into the facts?
Today Vic and Hame take a look at Alcohol related dementia, Also called Wernicke-Korsakoff, is a form of dementia related to the excessive drinking of alcohol. This affects memory, learning and other mental functions. Korsakoff’s syndrome and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome are particular forms of alcohol related brain injury which may be related to alcohol related dementia.
It affects lots of people and believe it or not - can be preventable. Stopping drinking is just the start, then it's time to engage in lots of weird and wonderful activities in order to stave off dementia as you get older. So, take a listen and find out what you should do to keep that lump of flesh in yer noggin firing on all cylinders.
There are also a few poo stories not no reason what-so-ever.
