  1. Understanding and Treating Real OCD with Berkeley Runia Paulsen (Part 2)

Understanding and Treating Real OCD with Berkeley Runia Paulsen (Part 2)

Our guide today, Berkeley Runia Paulsen, shares her personal experience with OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), which began after the death of her brother when she was 11 years old. Our conversation walks through the lonely nature of OCD, common yet widely unknown obsessions and compulsions, and Berkeley's journey through various treatments, including exposure response prevention (ERP) therapy. We also learn about the heavy impact of OCD on daily life, the importance of cultivating uncertainty over "certainty" reassurances, and how family and caregivers can offer support. Berkeley's story highlights how a brain and a person suffering from OCD can transform through very accessible and effective treatment processes. There is a way out and we hope Berkeley's story delivers a lot of light to many who feel trapped in the dark spiraling tunnels of real OCD. You and Us, We got this. 3. "Ask a Therapist": How Do I Know if my Own Child is at Risk of Suicide? And is Prevention Possible?

"Ask a Therapist": How Do I Know if my Own Child is at Risk of Suicide? And is Prevention Possible?

What are the 3 factors highly increasing your teen's risk of suicide? Is my child at risk? Do I really know my child? Do I know how my child sees themselves? Does my child really feel seen and like they belong here? In this episode, Dr. Skinner shares how suicidal thoughts are actually much more common than we might believe, noting that most people have momentarily entertained the thought. However, those at risk are typically individuals who align with these 3 factors: 1. I'm impulsive, 2. I feel I am in a crisis, 3. I have access. Hence, the unusually high risk of teen suicide. Studies show access to a gun or a form of poisoning likely through medical pills or substances, HIGHLY increases chances of a teen attempting suicide. Also, most teens attempt suicide under an hour of deciding. Our discussion also highlights the role we have as parents of creating and sustaining a warm home environment, drawing on the Grant Study to show how loving, deeply communicative relationships in childhood lead to longterm resilience, safety and belonging. The concept of "accompaniment" is introduced, illustrating how attuned parenting help children feel known and safe along their years of tender growth. Our conversation concludes with the importance of community support, kindness, education...... and these resources below. The Silent Killer of Your Teen’s Mental Health: Lack of Sleep. Why Sweet Dreams Make Happy Kids & Teens with Sleep Expert Dr. Jessica Meers

Welcome to the sleep revolution. More than ever experts know how SLEEP defines the health of cognitive function, emotional regulation, social interaction... for everyone... but most especially teenagers! Sleep-deprived teens often struggle with moodiness, risky behaviors, relational skills and even academics due to being forced to operate on insufficient sleep.  The cascade of poor sleep can result in what Dr. Skinner refers to as "ego depletion," leaving teens incapable of functioning at their best, or even just adequately.  Are our teenagers being rebellious or lazy, or is there more to the story? Dr. Meers enlightens us on the biological changes that occur during adolescence, which can account for those infamous late nights and groggy mornings. Maybe their disengagement isn’t just teenage defiance— maybe our kids are exhausted! In this fascinating episode, renowned clinical psychologist and certified sleep medicine specialist, Dr. Jessica Meers, uncovers the hidden intricacies of sleep, focusing on the enigmatic and often elusive sleep patterns of teenagers—a topic more vital to their well-being than we might think. Join us to find out how better sleep for our kids and teens is possible, today on Finding Noble.  You and us, We got this. 5. “Ask a Therapist”: How to get your teen to talk, How to navigate a parent's addiction, & When parents can't quit battling with each other.

“Ask a Therapist”: How to get your teen to talk, How to navigate a parent's addiction, & When parents can't quit battling with each other.

Today we are revisiting our fan favorite 'Ask a Therapist' format, where we tackle the most asked questions sent in from YOU parents. Join our real expert Q&A with Dr. Skinner-- over the primary dilemmas you too are likely facing right now as a parent. David Brooks once admitted, “I don’t really know of many happy marriages. I know a lot of marriages where parents love their kids.”    Dr. Skinner similarly acknowledges it’s hard to keep the garden of marriage nurtured.  It doesn’t water itself even if, or especially if,  you both are involved with your busy family life.  Furthermore, conflict in parenting styles can also lead to further detachment from your partner. However, vocalizing a focused and united purpose in your desire for your kids happiness and growth, can unite you as a couple and bring you closer despite occupying different approaches.  Dr. Skinner tackles how to get teens to open up! He says, “There are types of things and conversations that are not easy for us to have as parents and it's not easy for our children to have with us.  So sometimes that's an earned conversation.   It takes time to develop that kind of nurturing, that kind of interaction where again, the concept of all human connection is safety.   I have to feel safe enough in your presence that you're not going to X, Y, Z, that you're going to hear me, that you're going to listen, that you still care, that you're still going to love me. I  think we often hold back because we're afraid of being judged.   We're afraid that our parents are going to judge us. They need to know that we are with them and we want to help them. We care." The last question is a tough one– addressing family secrets, specifically hidden parental porn use. However, Dr. Skinner gives us a beautiful and hopeful response on how to address some of the weightier issues within our family relationships.  Stay tuned for the whole episode– It’s worth it!.  You and us-- We got this, Carly Red & Dr. Skinner 00:00 Introduction and Session Overview 01:05 Everyday Parenting Battles 05:44 Unified purpose in Parenting 14:14 Put Down Your Parenting Weapons then Talk 19:24 Nurturing a Marriage within Parenting 23:23 Nurturing Relationships: Beyond Autopilot 23:48 Breaking Down Teen Communication Barriers 25:48 Encouraging Open Dialogue with Teens 30:48 Balancing Control and Independence in Parenting 34:16 Addressing Sensitive Issues: A Child's Perspective 39:29 Handling Family Secrets with Compassion 44:03 Concluding Thoughts and Resources Watch the episodes on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@FindingNoblePodcast https://findingnoble.com/ We are hoping to help homes, families and educators everywhere… so please  like, review, subscribe and...  even share with friends and family looking for parenting support. “It’s really hard to parent when you're beating the crap out of yourself ” -- How to Model Healthy Self Talk AND how your inner voice & dialogue are impacting everything -- With Andrea Rowley

Do you ever wonder how that inner voice of yours is shaping your world and impacting your mental health, your body, your reality and especially your relationships?   Andrea Rowley (an expert in cognitive behavioral coaching and Chief Clinical Coach Officer at Noble Health) joins us this week to share how, "Our language is defining what we believe about ourselves." Andrea suggests considering questions like, "What am I missing?"  “Maybe there is more to this inner narrative outside of me, that I am not seeing?”  This shift away from yourself-centric mid brain, not only fosters a healthier self-relationship, but also activates the brain'sproblem-solving prefrontal cortex.  Dr. Skinner adds, "Curiosity is a huge factor here," encouraging listeners to replace our self-condemnation with curiosity and challenging our ingrained negative beliefs.  Asking ourselves and our children frequently: “How is your relationship with yourself?  How are you speaking to yourself?  How are you treating yourself?”  ….These questions can reframe our miscalculated and misguided ideas about our worth and especially recenter our own children’s sense of worth.  Small simple shifts to more positive and compassionate inner language can move mental mountains! From Fixed to Flexible: How a Growth Mindset Will Make All the Difference in Your Parenting and Your Family's View of Success

" It's easy for us to think, Oh man, why can't I do this? Am I not smart enough? Am I not intelligent enough? What's wrong with me? And because we are in a society where it's fast paced and it's quick, I mean, really, if you want information, you go, you get on the chat whatever and it's right there. You get it. The problem with that is most of the things that we experience in life require work, persistence, and effort." -Dr. Skinner In this episode, we discuss how cultural and societal factors so often condition a fixed mindset over a growth mindset. We talk about the liberating language of growth and the transformation from celebrating inherent traits or outcomes to celebrating effort--- And how that may just get us further than we even thought possible. We also emphasize how curiosity and asking questions.. basically being willing to look dumb...will actually pave and create the path we are hoping to find ourselves on. And perhaps most importantly, Dr. Skinner helps us understand how growth mindsets in relation to relationships can become a game changer. This one is a goodie. Hope you will join us this week!
