How to prevent and support common yoga injuries with Ian Cresswell Warrior One Yoga

    • Health & Fitness

Today we are joined by the epic Ian Cresswell, one of our Mornington teachers. Ian is a husband, and dad and speaks the basics of 20 languages!

Ian has been teaching yoga for a decade and is both passionate and a specialist in all things physiology and anatomy. At uni, Ian specialised in Biomedical Science, with a speciality in advanced exercise physiology and anatomy, so he brings all the knowledge.

In our conversation, we discuss the importance of listening to your body first and how pain can often be a bad indicator of what’s happening internally. Ian takes us through the areas of our body that are at higher risk of injury, and what to be aware of with each of these areas.

We discuss wrist injuries, what a hamstring injury looks like and why knees should never be locked. He educates us about the risk of micro-tears and why daily movement is key. Ian also reveals a common post-partum injury to look out for and what movement to skip if you have vulnerable shoulders.

Ian reminds us to not be afraid to talk to our teacher before class, that way they can keep an eye on any concerns we might have. He also encourages us to take a moment at the beginning of class to check in - emotionally, energetically and physiologically to open that dialogue with our body.

We finish reflecting on how yoga is really all about surrender. If Child’s Pose is calling you, go there.
