How to become the main character of your money

How to become the main character of your money

In today's throwback solo-episode, I revisit a favourite from three years ago: being the main character of your finances. This concept is all about prioritising yourself and acting in ways that benefit you at your best.

Main character energy requires big-picture thinking, and looking beyond short-term desires to make financial decisions that truly benefit your long-term goals. We'll discuss common behaviours that undermine your financial confidence, like spending to meet others' expectations or making impulse purchases that don’t align with your values.

It's time to romanticise your financial progress, and appreciate the small wins that often go unnoticed. It's about making informed decisions, understanding your personal financial levels, and aligning your spending with your best self. Enjoy this journey back to 2021 and embrace your main character energy!

    Episode highlights:

Reframe your mindset about money from a short-term, consumption-focused view to seeing it as a tool for long-term wellbeing and security.
Recognise and eliminate financial behaviours that cater to others' expectations or short-term desires, and instead align spending with your personal values and goals.
Celebrate small financial wins and progress, and understand that true financial freedom comes from thoughtful, intentional spending and saving.

Are "spending runways" draining your money?

Are "spending runways" draining your money?

In this episode, I introduce the concept of a "spending runway," a term I coined to describe how certain situations and emotions can lead us to spend more money as momentum builds. These runways exist everywhere, from airport shopping and home styling to event planning and beyond. For instance, an initial purchase at an airport can lead to a cascade of spending on food, magazines, and souvenirs. Similarly, starting a home renovation project can trigger a series of additional purchases as you strive for the perfect look. By recognising these spending runways, we can become more mindful of our financial decisions and intercept unnecessary expenses before they spiral out of control. I share practical tips (that I've actually tried!) to help you identify these patterns in your own life, so you can take control of your spending habits. Tune in to discover how understanding your spending runways can lead to more intentional and satisfying financial choices.

On another note, my wardrobe challenge has entered a new era… Introducing The Wardrobe Project. Find out more and register here:

    https://thebrokegeneration.com/the-wardrobe-project-challenge/

    Episode highlights:

Discussion on how social settings, like attending events or gatherings, can create spending runways due to peer pressure or the desire to fit in.
Insights into how retailers design environments to create spending runways, such as strategic product placements and promotions..
Introduction of specific budgeting techniques to counteract spending runways, such as setting spending limits and using cash instead of cards.

“The airport is a really great example of an environment that creates a spending runway, not only when we're at the airport does money feel like Monopoly money like it doesn't count. We're also in the mindset of we're on holiday, we're on vacation, we can do whatever we want. This doesn't count..."Emma [10:50]

“You go in for one thing, which in this instance is fairly rational. Maybe you don't need the sandals, maybe you do. It's neither here nor there, but that purchase and that environment and that intention then creates further subsequent purchases."Emma [13:06]

“We like to buy, but we don't actually like to style. We think that we buy style, but we actually create style with what we've got."Emma [30:46]

Is success the best revenge? The Comments Section with Emma and Victoria

Is success the best revenge? The Comments Section with Emma and Victoria

In the final episode of The Comments Section, we dive headfirst into the complex nature of success. We start by exploring our personal definitions of success and how they vary, from simply getting through a tough day to making a long-term impact. We discuss the surprisingly positive power of revenge as a motivator to prove people wrong and achieve our goals. Though ‘revenge’ has negative associations, it can be a very satisfying driver of success, whether it’s in lifestyle, assets, or career, as long as you keep yourself in check.

Emma also flexes her financial psychology muscles, discussing how our comfort zones around money shape our beliefs and behaviours. We touch on revenge consumption, examining how you can align your spending motivations with personal values rather than trying to prove yourself to others. We also reflect on when it’s time to pump the brakes on your revenge/success journey, emphasising the importance of regular check-ins to see your progress and setting firm milestones to properly celebrate your achievements.

How to cultivate an ROI mindset across 6 areas of life and money

How to cultivate an ROI mindset across 6 areas of life and money

Ever wish you could do a quick return on investment calculation on that roomier flight ticket you’re eyeing off? It turns out, you kinda can! In this episode, I’m exploring the concept of Return on Investment (ROI) beyond its traditional business context, applying it to personal finance and everyday life. By adopting an ROI mindset, you can build financial confidence, wellness, and a positive relationship with your money. We'll dive into six key areas: spending, savings, debt, time, career, and self-investment. By making informed decisions tailored to your individual values and goals you can maximise those returns, regardless of whether they’re financial, lifestyle, or emotional.

Thanks for investing your time listening to this episode and don't forget to give the ROI mindset a red hot go, and let me know what changes you're making over on socials!

    Episode highlights:

Good debt or bad debt? Evaluating the ROI of debt can reveal whether it leads to valuable financial or lifestyle improvements.
Treating time as a currency allows you to make decisions that maximise your personal and professional returns.
Viewing yourself as an asset and investing in personal growth, skills, and well-being can yield significant long-term returns, enriching your life and career.

“Cultivating an ROI mindset allows you to assess how you are evolving and how you can evolve your financial behaviour to keep up with that evolution"Emma [05:06]

“Having this transactional view of what am I putting in and what am I getting out can be really beneficial in helping you reclaim the decisions that you're making."Emma [20:19]

“You are your own investment vehicle, baby. You can get yourself up and get stuff out of you that enriches your life."Emma [27:14]

Fun, compelling, and well-researched!

I never write reviews, but I’ve been listening to Emma’s podcast for a while, and it’s maybe my favorite personal finance podcast. As I’m studying personal financial planning and financial therapy, I listen to tons of this type of content. Emma’s stands out in how it’s super clear she’s actually reading the research on financial psychology—not just opining about her own experiences. And as a result, she gives way more thorough and helpful advice on how we can improve our relationships with money. I learn so much from her, and I think she’s hilarious, fun, and super relatable—like I would want to be her friend. Don’t skip this one!

Thought-Provoking and Practical

I love that Emma takes a broad range of topics, from joy to fashion psychology, and links it back to our relationships with money! She has fascinating guests that she has great conversations with, but my favorite episodes are the ones where she takes a topic and gives several probing questions or scenarios for you to reflect on with regards to your attitude about money. She has definitely broadened the way I think about money and has made me face a number of unhealthy attitudes/habits I have. I can truly say I’ve grown in my money handling as a result of this podcast.

LOVE!!!

Finally some relatable advice about money and how to think about money. I love listening to your podcast, you give such honest and wise advice. I grew up very very poor and now live somewhat comfortably, and you have helped me so much with my thoughts about money. I look forward to your episodes so much!!!
