What We Discuss In this Episode:
Megan shares how her personal health struggles led her to pursue nutrition, revealing the dark side of diet advice. She burned out from extreme exercise and diets, learning the hard way.
Megan highlights the fact that 88% of Americans are metabolically unhealthy and outlined the five metrics of metabolic syndrome: blood sugar, waist circumference, blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides.
Megan stresses metabolic issues are reversible even at prediabetes but can progress to diabetes, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer's without intervention. Small changes now avert major health crises later.
Megan recommends avoiding "naked carbs" by pairing carbohydrates with protein and fat to slow absorption. Focus on non-starchy veggies and limit added sugars and liquid calories from soda to support stable blood sugar.
Megan also emphasizes the role of exercise, stress management, quality sleep and social support in metabolic health. Movement after meals reduces spikes while chronic stress sabotages even healthy diets.
She advises focusing on protein and veggies before carbs, getting consistent sleep, and replacing sugary drinks with water as top priorities for anyone seeking metabolic support. Small steps lead to big results.

    About Dr. David Bilstrom:
Dr. David Bilstrom is a fellow of the American Academy of Integrative Medicine as well as an advanced fellow in anti-aging, regenerative, and Functional Medicine. He is on a mission to revolutionize how autoimmune and chronic diseases are treated worldwide by teaching the science-based fundamentals of Functional Medicine.
He has been practicing for over 30 years, and is quadruple board certified in Functional and Regenerative Medicine, Integrative Medicine, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and Medical Acupuncture.
Dr. Bilstrom is the Director of the International Autoimmune Institute — the first medical center in the country associated with a teaching hospital to treat all types of autoimmune disease using Functional Medicine.

What We Discuss In This Episode:
Dr. David Bilstrom, is a leading functional medicine physician seeking to revolutionize autoimmune treatment through root cause resolution. Our discussion covers gut health, vitamin D sensitivity, and reversing chronic disease.
Dr. Bilstrom shares how witnessing patients' medication side effects led him to explore functional medicine. He trained in medical acupuncture, finding success treating complex cases. This opened his mind to integrating non-traditional therapies.
Fixing the vitamin D receptor through daily supplements is key to healing the gut and resetting the microbiome, reversing conditions from IBS to diabetes. Epigenetics shows diseases are driven by gene expression, not genetics, allowing holistic reversal.
Resistance to vitamin D despite sufficient levels impacts the gut profoundly. Combining vitamin D with prebiotics and butyrate protects the breast tissue microbiome from cancer via this mechanism. Individualized epigenetic optimization is discussed.
Certain probiotics like lactobacillus fail to colonize due to stress hormone imbalance. Dr. Bilstrom's protocol resets cortisol, allowing probiotics and lifestyle changes to reshape the microbiome and resolve disease.
Dr. Bilstrom makes scientific resources freely available through his website, videos and courses. He wrote a book for nurse practitioners seeking holistic autoimmune treatment education to spread this knowledge worldwide. Early lifestyle intervention is key to prevention.
     Key Takeaways:
Functional medicine approach to these issues How is it that gut disruption is playing a part in just about everything that drives autoimmune and chronic disease? Why hormone imbalance (estrogen dominance) is the most dangerous disease in women. LLN Episode #231: Susan Masterson – Learn The Secrets To Living With An Autoimmune Disease...

LLN Episode #231: Susan Masterson – Learn The Secrets To Living With An Autoimmune Disease...

    https://calendly.com/lwadsworth/clarity-callAbout Susan Masterson:
Dr. Susan Masterson is a Licensed Psychologist with over 30 years combined training and experience with behavior modification, mental health treatment, lifestyle improvement, teaching, mentoring, and writing.
She is the author of website (Autoimmune Self-Care) geared toward educating/helping people improve lifestyle behaviors while living with a chronic illness (Sjogren's Disease/Autoimmunity).
Dr. Susan is also the creator/author of books, videos and educational content, all with a focus on strengthening the mind and body.

What We Discuss In This Episode:
Dr. Susan Masterson shares how she lived with an undiagnosed autoimmune disease for decades. It was a real mix of emotions for her on this journey, especially in light of how the healthcare professionals say lab work is fine – not such not good news when you're feeling terrible.
Susan points out that we can't necessarily do anything about the things that are going to happen to us - we know we can't control everything – but we can have control over how we react to things.
Her is finding ways to help people tap into those moments of, “I feel good.” (Not  positive thinking. )  She hones in on things that make you smile, what makes you laugh, what makes you do that makes you feel good.  For example, Susan talks about what you liked to do when you were a little kid? What made you laugh when you were little?  Susan encourages us to find what lights us up.
She also shares some mindfulness exercises – especially when it comes to feeling judged by others as to how they think you should or shouldn’t react to your illness, pain or situation. You need to find those pockets of time and just fill your mental space with that as often as possible. Susan strongly encourages coloring for a good mindful state and shares her own experience in this regard.  She shares her experiences with mindfulness guided drawing or coloring activities which have been shown to be better at reducing anxiety.
She talks about a field of psychology called positive psychology.  It's not the old psychology where they used to try to remove negative mood states, but this is a way to strengthen the positive and grow that positivity.  Gratitude is a way to keep you there. Mindfulness, gratitude, the journaling can help keep you there.
She emphasizes practicing the mindful journaling, mindful coloring, reiterating that that the whole point of what she shares is to fill the space rather than try to pull negative stuff out of the mental space.
Susan shares about the Anxiety Relief Coloring Pages & Journal Prompts Book she published. This book is different to regular coloring books as it’s anchors you to the present moment.
    Key Takeaways:
How to generate your own positive emotions to benefit your well-being and physical health. How to elicit a positive emotional state. How present moment awareness/mindfulness can reduce chronic pain and facilitate healing. Mood traits and immune function Positive Affect Journaling Coloring and anxiety relief

LLN Episode #230: Dr. Jeff Crippen - ⏰Chiropractic: The Immune System's Best Friend

LLN Episode #230: Dr. Jeff Crippen - ⏰Chiropractic: The Immune System's Best Friend

    About Dr. Jeff Crippen:
Dr. Jeff Crippen is a Chiropractor, nutritionist and coach who enjoys helping others unlock their true potential.
Dr. Jeff has helped clients both through chiropractic care and nutrition at his wellness clinic in Saint Jo, Texas as well as through individualized mindset coaching with the Advanced Coaching and Leadership Center.
He finds a holistic approach — optimizing spirit, mind, and body — the most efficient and effective way to create a lifetime of timeless youth.

What We Discuss In This Episode:
Frustrated by years of ineffective traditional treatments for severe headaches, Dr. Jeff pursued chiropractic and nutrition degrees, unlocking his ability to help others heal holistically by following basic health principles, some of which he shares with us in this episode.
Dr. Jeff outlines key lifestyle factors and nutrients vital for immune function, such as avoiding inflammatory foods, limiting sugar, and obtaining vitamin C, D, and minerals. He also discusses detecting and addressing underlying infections or weaknesses.
Dr. Jeff also shares that by optimizing nerve function through adjustments, chiropractic enhances communication between organs, shown to up-regulate the immune system. Proper nerve flow is key to coordinating immune cell activity.
We discuss how, by staying open during lockdowns, Dr. Jeff supported many diagnosed with or recovering from COVID using targeted nutrition, herbs, and lifestyle changes. This gave patients' bodies the tools to finish recovery and avoid long-term issues.
Common among midlife and perimenopausal women, Dr. Jeff shares how thyroid and adrenal issues share connections and stressors like infections, food sensitivities, and lifestyle demands. Comprehensive testing and a holistic rebuilding process are needed for resolution.
Specific vitamins, minerals, herbs and organ support optimize the function of immune organs like the thymus and bone marrow. Both adding beneficial factors and removing inflammatory influences like food allergens strengthens one's defenses long-term.
Dr. Jeff closes out sharing his book and what it’s about: Timeless Youth.
