When to Update Your Podcast Website

When to Update Your Podcast Website

If you're not a web novice, it can be hard to know when to update your podcast website. So, so many podcasters are doing their show because they are passionate and knowledgeable on their topic, but that doesn't mean they are familiar with all the behind the scenes tasks that are required to make the podcast run well. If you're not sure on how to manage your podcast website, you're not alone. Mike Dell and Dave Clements, from Blubrry support, go over some of the basics to keep your website running smoothly.

Of course, they also dive into some new celebrity podcasts, hackers in podcasting and money spent on podcast advertising.

Just a note, Mike does say this is episode 231 at the beginning, but it is in fact, episode 232.

Thanks for joining us on this episode of Podcast Insider. Looking to be a guest on the show? Let us know.

    Question(s) of the Week:

Question: What have you found the best way of starting an introduction in a podcast episode?

Answer: Just start. I know that is too easy; what I like to do is say hi and quick welcome to the episode.  Sometimes I go over what is going to be in the episode if it’s many things, and I use a saying at the beginning of my personal shows. Some people edit a quote out of something in the middle of the show as a “cold open”. Some play music (legal music like we do), and some just get right into it. It shouldn’t take more than 30 seconds to get into the content. Again, this is totally dependent on what your show is about, the format that YOU choose.

    Can You Moderate a Podcast?

    Can You Moderate a Podcast?

Podcasters can say anything they want; that's a good thing and a bad thing sometimes. Moderating or moderators for podcasting currently does not exist and is questionable of whether it ever will. Mike and MacKenzie discuss this and more, such as podcasts and pets - are they the similar?

    Best Practice:

Is there a best time of day to release your episodes?

    Short answer…  no, not really.

Longer answer…  It’s best to pick a day or time that works for your production schedule and your audience.

Podcast listening is a non-real-time thing. If you are consistent on what day(s) and times you publish, your listeners will know to expect a new episode at a particular time which will let them build you into their schedule. Just about any time is a good time, just try to be somewhat consistent. This also helps some of the syndication points (like Apple Podcasts) update quicker as they will learn when to expect new content and pull it into their directories (don’t rely on this, it doesn’t always work).

    Question(s) of the Week

Question: Chris on Facebook: I normally keep 300 episodes in my RSS feed. All my episodes are on my website in the episode posts. I'm thinking about dumping down to just serving just the last 100 or less. What are your thoughts?

Answer: via Todd: 90% of podcasts globally get 90% of their lifetime downloads within the first 96 hours. I only have 40 episodes in my feed and I am on episode 1509 (Geek News Central).

If you have written good show notes with a good episode title and a good first paragraph Google will drive traffic to those older episodes. If you are keeping it at 300, be sure to use the episode maximizer feature in PowerPress.

From Mike: I agree with Todd on this. Keeping 300 is most-likely not needed as most people will never go back that far in an RSS feed, some might but it all depends on the type of content. News or topical shows aren’t long-tail, however some narrative-type podcasts, how-to or informational shows (where the info does not go out of date) may have more of a need to go to the full 300.

This show, Podcast Insider, has 52 episodes in the feed, a year’s worth. The rest (179 episodes) are available on our website. This keeps the feed’s loading speed faster and the file size smaller.

What Is In A Podcast Name?

What Is In A Podcast Name?

What is in a podcast name? And why can they be so challenging to choose sometimes. One of the most basic and first things you must do when creating your podcast, is choosing a name for your show. We've got some recommendations on how to handle the situation and make it easier on yourself.

And, we've got a great topic for our Question of the Week, how to get over the 'just starting' hump.

Never news to us, Forbes is saying podcasting ad dollars are coming in as popularity in podcasting grows.

40% of the web is now on WordPress! As many of you know, we're big fans of WordPress.

    Best Practice:

What’s in a podcast name? How to choose a title for your podcast.

Think of something that describes what your show is about or at least doesn’t make people think it’s about something completely unrelated.

Google the name you are thinking of, make sure it’s not already being used. This can save you a big headache and even potentially a trademark lawsuit.

Make sure it doesn’t have another meaning that you don’t want associated with your show.

Make it easy to spell and say out loud. Mike had a friend that used the name ‘Procrasticast’ for a while, but he had to change it.

Do not keyword stuff your titles. For example, the TV show MASH was just called Mash, not “MASH - A comedy about doctors in the Korean War with Alan Alda”.

Make it easy for people to find your show and talk about your show.

    Question(s) of the Week:

Question: Faith via Facebook - What’s some advice can you give me? I hate the sound of my voice but want to start my podcast. I’m nervous.

Answer: It’s not really a tech question, but we will tackle it here.  First off, NOBODY likes the sound of their own voice at first (or maybe never). Nobody hears you like you hear yourself so what you sound like recorded, sounds weird to you - but only you.  Everyone else hears what you really sound like, which I’m guessing is not bad at all. You sound how you sound. Don’t worry about it, and most people get used to it. Just start!

    Question(s) of the Week

Question: From Joshua on Facebook “Curious - is there any way of knowing what CFNetworks is on our statistics?”

Answer: CFNetworks is a Framework for developers of iOS apps.  A lot of podcast apps on iOS use it such as, but not limited to Amazon, NPR One, Skipcast and more. Basically, it’s an iOS app that downloaded your episode but not necessarily the Apple Podcasts app itself. In a lot of cases these apps use a 'user agent' so we can tell you which app. However, some of them do not always use a separate user agent. They are legitimate downloads but we cannot be identified as a particular app, so we report it as CFNetwork in the stats.

Trust and Advice in the Podcast Community

Trust and Advice in the Podcast Community

Podcasting is great because no experience is necessary to get started, but that means you run the dilemma of 'how do you know who to trust for podcasting advice'. Finding the right people to trust and get advice from in the podcast community can take some time. Question(s) of the Week:

Question: Podcast subscriber numbers are a bit of a mystery. It seems impossible to find out the number, can you tell me how and why?

Answer: Truthfully, ‘Subscribers’ is an impossible statistic to find out accurately. Various apps use completely different ways to “Subscribe” or “follow” a podcast. They all use different timing to hit (and PULL) the RSS feed. Some apps even let the user set the timing. So, I may be subscribed to your show and my phone checks once an hour.  Someone else might subscribe and their phone hits the feed 2 times a day. This is impossible to know who is who from web logs.

In Blubrry stats, pick an episode that is 30 days old, click on it then go to Distribution. From there add the numbers from Podcatchers and Mobile Apps. That is a good guess of subscribers.

Also, look in Trending, Day-to-Day and you will see spikes on the first day. That first day is mostly subscribers and will give you another estimate as to the number you have.

Best Practices for Podcast Show Notes

Best Practices for Podcast Show Notes

As podcasters ourselves at Blubrry Podcasting we have real firsthand experience on the matter and can provide best practices for podcast show notes. We also have changed the way we do show notes over the years, so there is no one template.

Recently Apple has been causing quite the conversation on whether or not they're going to be starting a paid subscription podcast service, and Spotify is having troubles of their own with investors. Something is always happening in the podcast industry, Daniel J. Lewis know this, that's why he created a new service to keep track of it all. Tune in to get all the details.

Wall Street is starting to question Spotify’s podcast investments.

Daniel J. Lewis launched a new service for podcast industry stats.

    Best Practice:

Best practices for podcast show notes

Write your blog post, show notes, etc for Google. Meaning, remember keywords, and things related to SEO. The audio portion is strictly important for listeners only.

The majority of podcast listeners will never see your show notes. So...

Don’t worry too much about what your show notes look like in the different apps. There are some best practices, but you will never get all the different places that list your show notes to look exactly like you want them. It can’t be done.

Transcriptions are not necessarily a good idea for the main show notes. They will not help you with SEO unless they are edited to be good for SEO. If you do transcripts, link them in your show notes as a PDF or to another webpage.

    Question(s) of the Week:

Question: Why is my browser saying my website is insecure?

Answer: Likely, your SSL certificate is expired or never existed. Google Chrome and Firefox (and a lot of other browsers) are pushing that the whole internet becomes “secure” with SSL. https (secure) instead of the old http. You can’t just add an S and call it a day, it requires an SSL Certificate installed on your website, most web hosts make it easy. Some of web hosts will charge you a yearly fee and others will include that in your hosting fee.
