Quantum Birds

Annie McEwen went to a mountain in Pennsylvania to help catch some migratory owls. Then Scott Weidensaul peeled back the owl’s feathery face disc, so that she could look at the back of its eyeball. No owls were harmed in the process, but this brief glimpse into the inner workings of a bird sent her off on a journey to a place where fleshy animal business bumps into the mathematics of subatomic particles. With help from Henrik Mouristen, we hear how one of the biggest mysteries in biology might finally find an answer in the weird world of quantum mechanics, where the classical rules of space and time are upended, and electrons dance to the beat of an enormous invisible force field that surrounds our planet. Nukes

In an episode first reported in 2017, we bring you a look up and down the US nuclear chain of command to find out who gets to authorize their use and who can stand in the way of Armageddon. President Richard Nixon once boasted that at any moment he could pick up a telephone and - in 20 minutes - kill 60 million people. Such is the power of the US President over the nation’s nuclear arsenal. But what if you were the military officer on the receiving end of that phone call? Could you refuse the order? In this episode, we profile one Air Force Major who asked that question back in the 1970s and learn how the very act of asking it was so dangerous it derailed his career. We also pick up the question ourselves and pose it to veterans both high and low on the nuclear chain of command. Their responses reveal once and for all whether there are any legal checks and balances between us and a phone call for Armageddon. The Darkest Dark

We fall down the looking glass with Sönke Johnsen, a biologist who finds himself staring at one of the darkest things on the planet. So dark, it’s almost like he’s holding a blackhole in his hands. On his quest to understand how something could possibly be that black, we enter worlds of towering microscopic forests, where gold becomes black, the deep sea meets the moon, and places that are empty suddenly become full. It's hard to estimate the value of this podcast

This podcast stands out as pretty much constantly astounding. As someone who writes about science for a living, the 'scientific' concepts here are rendered in an enviably fascinating and pretty much idiot-proof way. It's a testament to the skills of the hosts in their use of the audio format that they can cruise through really complex stuff and give the ordinary listener entertainment and learning in a single scoop. This is the best. Now if they would only get season one on itunes....

When I was in the 7th grade, I had a science teacher who would make us listen to Radio Lab while working on labs in class. The first podcast I ever listen to was The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Listening to this story sent me on a whirlwind. Wanting to learn everything about Lack’s and peaking my interest in other podcast. Since that moment in 2013, I have listened to every radiolab podcast since. Listening to it doing chorus around the farm and now today. Thank you for helping this little boy grow and dream past the tiny town in Oklahoma I called home💛💛💛

Problem— since the original hosts left, every other week is a re-run and it’s so annoying. It just too much. Your new content is good and it’s slow to come out or is drowned by y’all essentially being an archive show now. Cut back frequency in general? maybe every 4th or 3rd is a re-run? You’re losing us. The last few shows have been great. I admit I was getting a little frustrated with all the reruns. I imagine it’s hard to come up with new material all the time. Big shoes to fill with Jad and Robert. But the Quantum Birds episode knocked it out of the park! Mind blown! Hopefully more like that to come. Jonathan
