In more than a decade of training and clinical practice as a psychiatrist, I've become increasingly disillusioned by the American healthcare system. It prioritizes profit over progress at the expense of OUR health. The average American spends almost twice as much on healthcare as the next highest spending country, yet our life expectancy drags four years behind other industrialized nations and ranks OUTSIDE the top 50 in the world. The system is a disaster, yet it's broadcast as 'the greatest healthcare system in the world.' Renegade Psych wants to return medicine's focus to PROGRESS OVER PROFIT, and limit the influence and power of the pharmaceutical industry and big business entities, whose primary motivations are financial in nature.

This conversational podcast is released monthly via SERIES on particular topics. There are 8-12 SEGMENTS, or episodes, per topic. I interview internationally-recognized experts in their fields AND relatively unknown, up-and-coming healthcare providers. Hopefully, we can educate patients AND providers about our medical system (especially mental health), so they can make better and more informed healthcare decisions.

    10.2 Inner Excellence/ACT: A Convergence of Ideas

    10.2 Inner Excellence/ACT: A Convergence of Ideas

Here, Jim and I outline Inner Excellence alongside ACT therapy and the concepts that predecess it.  It's so interesting to me that so many of our ideas seem to converge despite coming from drastically different backgrounds.  It's also telling that someone who works with high-performance athletes from around the world is utilizing some of the same concepts I am utilizing with my patients, almost as if this is a manual for how to live your best life, regardless of your athletic abilities.  Enjoy!

Inner Excellence/ACT: Principles of Inner Excellence

Inner Excellence/ACT: Principles of Inner Excellence

Here, Jim talks about his underlying principles of Inner Excellence.  He has taken a lot of core concepts of psychology and sports psychology, and used some of his experience with neurolinguistics to supplement what he has learned, imploring patients to reprogram their subconscious, let go of self-centeredness and be selfless to reduce anxiety, and suspend their judgment.  Be Open. Be Curious. Be Inquisitive.

Inner Excellence/ACT: Closing Thoughts and Song

Inner Excellence/ACT: Closing Thoughts and Song

Hope you enjoyed my conversation with Jim Murphy about his book, Inner Excellence, and its convergence with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.  Here we present some of our closing thoughts, followed by a song, "Found," by Jared Foos, off his inaugural solo album, "Who Loves You Baby."  ENJOY and Spread the word about Jared, he's mega-talented and needs more exposure.  And send me any songs or artists that need more exposure and I'll do what I can to feature them in my series.

10.0 Inner Excellence and ACT: TEASER

10.0 Inner Excellence and ACT: TEASER

This is the newest release from RenegadePsych and is on a slightly different topic, ACT therapy.  I interview Jim Murphy, a renowned high-performance athletes mental coach who has written an incredibly moving and motivating book, Inner Excellence, summarizing what he has learned in his personal and professional journey.  Though he does not have a background in ACT, so many of the concepts overlap.  The series is supplemented by one of my initial recordings with Rob Goodknight discussing RFT, or Relational Frame Theory, the theory behind ACT, or Acceptance and Commitment Theory.  We talk about how understanding the way that our minds work can lead to skills that, when practiced, can lead to a more fulfilling, and ultimately, more successful life.  Hope you enjoy!

Low-Dose Lithium: RANT + Guest Intro

Here, I rant about the underutilization of lithium and all of its potential benefits, setting the stage for more in-depth conversation and discussion about its array of uses, then introduce Dr. Sudhir Gadh, a New York City psychiatrist who has had tremendous success utilizing low dose lithium in the addiction setting, as well as in his non-addiction, private practice.
