Toss The Toxins w/ Marilee Nelson

Toss The Toxins w/ Marilee Nelson

This week Shanna and Rian speak with Marilee Nelson, co-founder of Branch Basics, a company on a mission to “help people create healthy homes and experience the power of pure” by educating people on the importance of removing toxins from their home and offering a line of products that safely and effectively replace these dangerous household products. Most people do not know everyday household products are causing health issues and negatively impacting the body’s ability to fight off anything else that may be going on in the body by outgassing a chemical soup that is wreaking havoc on our immune system. Marilee powerfully shares how eliminating toxins from her home environment prevented her from having a kidney transplant in her 20s and, years later, saved her son from the detrimental affects of having been exposed to high grade pesticides in a chemical accident he had when he was ten years old.

Whether you or a loved one are currently dealing with debilitating health issues or not, removing toxins form the home is critical to keeping our immune system operating optimally. Tune into this episode to learn not only the power of removing these toxic items from your home but where to began applying this process of “tossing the toxins” from your home.

Marilee is a Board Certified Nutritionist, Certified Building Biologist, Building Material Specialist and is on the advisory board for Documenting Hope. For 30 years, she has worked with the chronically ill, children with disabilities, and the mold and chemically injured. She lives in the Texas Hill Country with her husband.

Yogic Philosophies & Practice of Ricardo Gonzalez-Jurado

Yogic Philosophies & Practice of Ricardo Gonzalez-Jurado

Ricardo Gonzalez-Jurado is the owner and operator of the sacred Samadhi Yoga Retreat, a 30-acre nature preserve in the Texas Hill Country dedicated to silence and yogic education for children and children at heart. Through the Samadhi Yoga Retreat, Ricardo and his extended team of practitioners are dedicated to teaching children and adults the philosophy of yoga with the intention of planting seeds of harmony, balance and love. One of the most fascinating features of the Samadhi Yoga Retreat is a three story cedar pyramid designed and built by Ricardo as a tribute to silence and teaching yoga philosophy to all that inquire (we had the opportunity to attend a sound healing class hosted in the pyramid!). The retreat center is available for yoga retreats, meditation, and other wellness events with a focus of connection, silence, and well-being.

In this episode, Shanna and Tracey chat with Ricardo about his journey from El Salvador to the Texas Hill Country (via Guatemala, Belize & Houston!), his early exposure to yoga as a child and the impact this ultimately had on him creating the Samadhi Yoga Retreat (and by creating we mean literally building the three story pyramid and accompanying buildings!). He also shares the three philosophies that guide his life as well as the overall philosophy of yoga so you may want to grab a pen and paper before settling into this wisdom packed episode.

Because we love you and want you to easily take these powerful philosophies into your own life, we’re sharing his three life philosophies here:

1.) I Am Because We Are (focusing on community, unity and sharing with one another)

2.) “When you learn, teach. When you get, give.” - Maya Angelou

3.) "If your plan is for one year, plant rice. If your plan is for ten years, plant trees. If your plan is for a hundred years, educate children.” - Confucius

Definitely tune into the episode to hear how he came across these particular philosophies (the first one might bring a tear to your eye; we know it did for us!) as well as to expand on the full meaning of them.

    Bodywork w/ Becky Rosenthal

    Bodywork w/ Becky Rosenthal

This week we talk with Becky Rosenthal about the lost art of Shiatsu, a Japanese form of bodywork that uses the practitioner’s fingers (Shiatsu translates to “finger pressure”), thumbs and palms to apply pressure to certain areas of the body called meridian channels, where the focus is on bringing the body back to homeostasis by working with the “energy body”. To help demystify this process of reading and working with stuck energy, Becky shares how shaking Shanna’s legs during their session revealed the need for Shanna to dance more! (You have to tune in to find out!)

Becky blends her palpable understanding of the physical body from her background in health education and massage therapy with the deeper, intuitive art of knowing how energy flows through the body from her training in Shiatsu along with a mindful practice of compassionate listening from her background as an ordained Buddhist to offer clients a multi-layered approach to determining and addressing what is going in their physical and emotional bodies. As with many wellness practices and modalities, anyone can benefit from Shiatsu but Becky says it really opens the door to begin a healing process, so the people who benefit the most are those who are ready to commit to a healing journey.

According to Becky’s favorite quote and a strong tenant to her practice, “stopping, calming and resting are preconditions for healing”. With today’s world being so fast paced and highly stressful, along with the effects of isolation from 2020, people are, unknowingly, energetically locked in freeze or flight modes which is causing the body to not digest food (and life) in the most optimal ways. Booking a Shiatsu session with Becky begins this process of healing by stopping, calming and resting, at least for the time your with her and in her space, which she has intentionally created to honor these needed elements of healing. Often people come to Becky by referral, having no understanding of what Shiatsu is or what can come from the session; they just know someone they trust said to they benefitted from it. We hope SoLive’s personal experience can serve as a beneficial referral for you, should it resonate.

The Power of Art to Heal w/ Jeanne Philippus

The Power of Art to Heal w/ Jeanne Philippus

This week we speak with Jeanne Philippus, owner of J. Philippus Art Studio & Gallery in San Antonio, TX about the power of art and healing. Her studio offers 90 minute classes in glass art, resin on charcuterie boards and acrylic pouring to individuals, groups, couples and parties, where all classes can be made kid friendly. Jeanne’s intention is to create a safe space for participants to creatively express who they are. Even though she guides and leads participants in these glasses, she says there are no rules to follow. She simply wants people to give themselves permission to sit and create. Whether you’re an experienced artist or a complete newbie, these classes help you discover your inner artist and so much more!

It’s the “so much more” that Jeanne says people unexpectedly respond to once they’ve attended a class (and has them coming back for more!). The 90 minute classes provide an opportunity to slowdown and be present as the process of creating art naturally and effortlessly pulls participants into what they’re doing. This heightened focus allows the class to become a form of meditation, where space is created for aspects of inner healing to begin taking place. It allows people to get out of their own way by effortlessly stepping out of their stressful thoughts into the present moment. And in some instances, it opens up space for buried traumas to surface and be healed. Jeanne truly believes you can turn something broken into something beautiful, but it takes time. Her art studio offers a permission slip for others to take the necessary time to begin this process of inner healing through an outer expression of art. This is all by intention as Jeanne prayed this would be a place of healing prior to opening her studio. The response to her classes overwhelmingly affirms this!

Tune in to hear Jeanne’s personal story of using art to heal her own trauma of losing her first husband early in their marriage as well as how it inspired her to open an art studio focused on helping others heal though the power of art.

The studio is open from 11:00am to 6:00pm, Monday through Saturday. For a list of classes, check out her website: JPhilippusart.com (or call the studio). You can follow her on social media here: Instagram and Facebook.
