Today on the podcast we chat with Salliann Powell.
Salliann is an ultra marathon runner and one amazing human!
I first met Salliann through waterpolo when our daughters played for Queensland together. She was the manager of the team, and my God, did those girls make her work!
I saw through social media that Sal was running ultra marathons and raising fund for the Nerve Connection Foundation,
so I decided to ask her to chat about her adventures and goals and I was blown away!
5 deserts in 12 months!
Africa (Namibia)
Chile (Atacama)
Mongolia (Gobi)
Antarctica (The last Desert)
Jordan
We chat about the mind set to run ultra marathons, the preparation, and why Salliann decided to do this.
It is such an amazing chat about just putting one foot in front of the other, mental strength and resilience.
I’ll add where you can follow Sal’s journey, send her messages of encouragement and donate to the foundation.
When Salliann finishes all 5 deserts, she will be the first Australian female to do this! Now THAT is amazing!!!

We equate how habits she has developed can be used by nurses to help their mental health and cope with stressful situations in the workplace.
We chat about how the online trolls attacked her after an amazing photo of her in training was put on the Broncos page and how she coped with it.
Finally we chat about tenderness. How she shows tenderness to herself.
This is a wonderful chat with an insightful and kind young woman.

Amin left Iran 11 years ago. He paid a smuggler to get out Iran, then to Malaysia,Indonesia and finally on a boat to Australia.
The wooden boat had holes in it, the engines stopped working, the smuggler fled the boat and they were left on their own.
To flee a country where your whole life is under threat takes immense bravery and courage. No one would make this decision to be smuggled out of a country lightly.
Amin shares these details with us. How he learnt English, works, has been married for the last 5 years and what his life looks like here in Australia.
This is a fascinating podcast around the implications of leaving a country illegeally and the domino effect once that decision has been made.
I hope you enjoy today’s chat.

Cheryl Leavy and what it means to her to be a First Nations Woman
Today I speak with the fabulous Cheryl Leavy. Cheryl is a proud First Nations woman, who generously gave of her time to discuss her culture with me.
She relates how we can approach First Nations people with tenderness in the health care setting and in general life. We discuss the diversity of our indigenous peoples differing countries and how important it is to just ask them about their cultures.
Cheryl is a story teller and will soon be releasing her first book. She is passionate about her culture and indeed, all First Nation people’s differing cultures, and how all Australians should be invested in understanding more about our First Nations peoples.
From the moment I met Cheryl, I was drawn to her. Her vibrancy, wisdom and willingness to share her knowledge (without judging my lack of knowledge) about her people was truly awe inspiring. I came away from this interview replaying the conversations over and over in my head.
It’s a true gift from someone when they can share knowledge about themself and that information makes you stop and reflect. Chatting with Cheryl did just that for me.
I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

A Nurses Intuition
Pippy Marshall is alive because a nurse trusted her intuition.
Not long after Pippy delivered her second child, Billy, via caesarian, she started to develop neck pain which progressed to stabbing pain and difficulty when breathing.
On assessment, all her vitals were normal. As the pain progressed, an experienced nurse asked Pippy to describe what she had been experiencing and her history. Armed with this information, she conversed with colleagues, trusted her gut and called the emergency team.
This saved Pippys life.
The podcast today showcases how special a nurses intuition is. The impact a pulmonary embolism has on someone’s life and how Pippy is managing living with a clot in her lung.
Pip felt it was important to share what has happened to her, with the hope that the information shared may save a life.
