    Stop Glamorizing Busy

    Stop Glamorizing Busy

President Dwight D. Eisenhower often said that what is important is rarely urgent and what is urgent is rarely important.
I’ve found that the most badass people I know, the ones who are the best in the world at their craft, are rarely busy in the way we’ve been taught to think of it. Being busy is a disease, a terminal one. It destroys your precious time. Being effective is about using every minute thoughtfully and mindfully as you make steady progress toward your dream. The biggest surprise to me has been that those people, those creators who are so deliberate and planned in the way they work, are also incredibly joyful and playful while they work. Planning and play aren’t opposites; they complement each other beautifully.
    Food for thought. Enjoy!

Nabil Ayers: Music , Writing, and A Time for Change

Nabil Ayers: Music , Writing, and A Time for Change

I'm excited to share my conversation with my dear friend Nabil Ayers. He's a multi-talented hyphenate who opened one of Seattle's iconic record stores, Sonic Boom at age 25.
As both an executive and an artist who began his career as a musician Ayers has performed on several albums on both independent and major labels.
Today, Nabil is the US General Manager of Beggars Group label 4AD where he has run campaigns for The National (GRAMMY award winner in 2018), Big Thief (GRAMMY award nominee in 2020), Grimes, Future Islands and St. Vincent as well as reissue campaigns including Pixies’ album Doolittle which was certified Platinum in 2019. In both 2019 and 2020, Ayers was named one of Billboard magazine's "Indie Power Players."
In this episode, we explore Nabil's interesting career from musician, to entrepreneur and music executive, and now writer. Nabil's recent writing about race and music has been published in The New York Times, NPR and GQ and he will publish his memoir with Viking Books in 2021.
    Enjoy!

Stress Is Optional with Cynthia Ackrill

Stress Is Optional with Cynthia Ackrill

    Ever feel stressed?
It's a question that almost is absurd. So much of our human experience involves stress and anxiety these days. It is further compounded by the fact that our brain is wired to respond to it. Adrenaline. Cortisol. Fight or flight... If a bear is chasing us, helpful. If you're reading the news? Not so much.
Enter Dr. Cynthia Ackrill. She's a physician, a stress expert, and leadership coach and she is on a mission to keep dis-stress from eroding focus, creativity, health, success, and relationships.
Today's episode is a couple of my favorite segments from her CreativeLive class on stress. But this is just a tip of the iceberg. Her class is a deep dive of how panic, anxiety, and stress can stand in the way of the life we want. The good news? We can stop the cycle.
    Enjoy!

Emmon ,

On my daily schedule

A few weeks back, I began listening to Chase Jarvis’s book “Creative Calling” and I noticed a serious uptick in my overall mood as well as my creative output in my personal and professional lives. When I finished it, I wanted more of the same and I’ve found it here. I found the interviews with Lori Gottlieb and Mario Armstrong really insightful (and inspiring) along with the book club sessions. The book and this podcast represents something even more important than what it is — a new way of living, bypassing fear, pursuing vision and great goals, making connections and pushing back on walls of reality which were only there in my mind. To me, it’s a new way of living. 🔥
