How to improve your marriage when your partner's not on board YET!

How to improve your marriage when your partner's not on board YET!

Looking to improve your marriage but feeling stuck because your partner isn't on board?
As a therapist, I've encountered this scenario often, especially from women.  But fret not! In this episode, I delve into strategies to navigate this situation and gradually draw your partner in.
First off, let's normalize the fact that not both partners are always on the same page simultaneously. Then, I share insights on understanding your partner's resistance and the underlying reasons behind it. Fear of vulnerability, differing perceptions of problems, and family upbringing can all play a role.
But fear not! You have the power to influence change within your marriage, starting with self-focused improvements.  By modeling the behaviors you wish to see from your partner, such as affection, communication, and shared activities, you can initiate positive shifts.
Moreover, nurturing your personal joy outside the marriage is crucial.  Whether it's joining a book club, pursuing hobbies, or setting personal goals, finding fulfillment independently enhances your overall well-being and indirectly impacts your relationship.
Effective communication is key!  Initiating casual discussions about each other's needs and engaging in joint activities like reading books or attending workshops together can foster mutual understanding and alignment.
Remember, patience and empathy are paramount.  It's about creating a shared journey towards growth and improvement, with each step contributing to a stronger, more fulfilling marriage.

FOMO vs. JOMO; Why having an averagely boring marriage is a good thing

FOMO vs. JOMO; Why having an averagely boring marriage is a good thing

Today, I'm diving deep into a fascinating topic: "FOMO vs. JOMO: Why Having an Averagely Boring Marriage Is a Good Thing."
In this solo episode, I explore the dichotomy between the fear of missing out and the joy of missing out, especially as it pertains to marriage. As couples reach midlife, the pressure to maintain a constantly thrilling relationship can become overwhelming. But what if I told you that an average, boring marriage is actually highly underrated?
I challenge the notion that boring equals dull and instead propose a perspective shift towards valuing commitment, longevity, and stability in relationships. By embracing predictability and continuity, couples can create a safe space where intimacy thrives.
However, I also emphasize the importance of balancing stability with excitement. Whether it's trying new experiences together or exploring different facets of intimacy, injecting a sprinkle of excitement into the relationship can reignite the spark without sacrificing the foundation of commitment.
Throughout the episode, I offer practical insights on navigating conflicts, prioritizing commitment over personal fulfillment, and cultivating a healthy balance in marriage. From being discerning about commitments to choosing advisors wisely, I provide actionable steps to nurture a fulfilling and enduring partnership.
So, if you're ready to challenge the allure of drama and intensity in relationships, and instead embrace the beauty of security and stability, tune in to this thought-provoking episode of the Midlife Marriage Podcast.
