    The Knowledge Gap Episode 6

This week we're covering chapter ten from The Knowledge Gap by Natalie Wexler, "No More Jackpot Standards." This chapter covers the story of a school district in Washoe County, Nevada, where teachers and administrators worked together to uncover how best to apply the Common Core Standards in the classroom. We found this chapter to be inspiring and full of hope, showing how teachers can fundamentally change the way they instruct when they discover new ways of doing things. Enjoy our discussion of chapter ten!

    The Knowledge Gap Episode 5

    The Knowledge Gap Episode 5

This week we're covering chapter nine from The Knowledge Gap by Natalie Wexler, "The Common Core: New Life for Knowledge, or Another Nail in its Coffin?" This chapter dives into the story of David Coleman, who was primarily responsible for the literacy standards in the Common Core. We discuss his love of close reading, his admiration for E.D. Hirsch, and his quest to integrate knowledge building and content into the Common Core Standards. Of course there was pushback, and we cover that all too. A lot of us have worked in schools where our speech and language goals have to be adapted to Common Core standards. This chapter gives us a lot of insight into where they came from and how we should really be addressing them in schools.

    The Knowledge Gap Episode 4

    The Knowledge Gap Episode 4

This week we're covering chapters seven and eight from The Knowledge Gap by Natalie Wexler. We've started part two of the book: "How We Got Here: The History Behind the Content-Free Curriculum." In chapter seven, Natalie takes us through the history of child-centered education and teachers' aversion to teacher-directed, content-focused instruction. We discuss Rousseauian principles, social efficiency, the open-classroom movement, and the puzzling opposition to learning factual information. Chapter eight, "Politics and the Quest for Content," covers recent education reform and the failed attempt to create national history standards. Once again, we're discussing how politics have negatively impacted progress in education and we're not happy about it.

    The Knowledge Gap Episode 3

    The Knowledge Gap Episode 3

This week we're covering chapters five and six from The Knowledge Gap by Natalie Wexler. Chapter five, "Unbalanced Literacy," is about the history of the balanced literacy movement, specifically the curriculum created by Lucy Calkins and the impact it had on education here in the United States (hint: it wasn't great). Chapter six is titled "Billions for Education Reform, but Barely a Cent for Knowledge" and we're pretty sure you can figure out what it's about. As Adrianne says, here come the billionaires! We talk about the history of education reform starting in the 1990s...where it's been on the right track and where it's failed. As always, we get a little worked up in this episode. How could we not??

    The Knowledge Gap Episode 2

    The Knowledge Gap Episode 2

This week we're covering chapters three and four from The Knowledge Gap by Natalie Wexler. These chapters are about the history of reading instruction in the United States. How have ideas about how to teach reading evolved? What is the whole-language approach? What happens when phonics are taught systematically to children, and what happens when teachers stop teaching phonics? We discuss the Reading Wars and how the conversation around teaching reading became politicized. If you love this episode, let us know what you think on Instagram!

Ms.Yari_1 ,

Love it!!!

I love the books recommendations they provide and discuss. They are very helpful to me as a teacher and a mom. Reading the books they are discussing, I learn new things or it reassures of me doing something right. For example, the 2x10 Strategy (from the SEL and The Brain Book), I’ve done this strategy and it really does help. Now reading about it helps me be confident and explain to the PIRT team what I am doing and how it works for me. Please give this podcast a try. You will love it!

So glad to find this podcast

As a parent, I was anxious and was struggling to introduce my girls to read. But Lauren and Adrianne make it easy for my girls to learn and absorb the information. My girls now love reading and they develop reading habits day by day and will continue to read.
