About the Podcast
When Burnout Becomes Reality is a podcast that combines lived experience with the science of burnout to help listeners prevent, recover and grow from burnout. I am your host, Shannon Swales, a clinical psychologist, blogger, author, and a human with lived experience, scientific knowledge, and skills on burnout.
Burnout is a phenomenon that develops slowly in an individual in response to ongoing and unrelenting workplace interpersonal stressors. Social Psychologist Christina Maslach and Human Resource Management Professor and Researcher Susan E. Jackson identified a set of symptoms and signs of burnout that is mainly accepted today. They are emotional exhaustion, cynicism/depersonalisation towards one's work, and a decrease in one's belief one can do their job or a reduced sense of personal achievement with one's work.
Burnout can occur in any field, particularly those working closely with vulnerable people. It appears not only in workplaces but also within parenting, carer, volunteering, and caring for self roles in chronic and ongoing health conditions that require ongoing management.
Development of the Podcast
I started this POD out of my own burnout experience. I noticed how great it felt to hear others were suffering from burnout too. It wasn't great that they were suffering, but it helped me feel less alone in it. It helped me to feel understood and unbeknownst to them; it helped me learn from the wisdom they had gained to help me recover and grow from burnout. This is why I continue to showcase lived experience guests on the POD. As I healed from burnout, I moved back into my work as a psychologist, and that is when I added the scientific knowledge aspect into the POD, having expert guests share their wisdom to help others.
So there you have it. I am incredibly proud of this POD and enjoy every minute of producing it. It is a monthly podcast with an episode released on the first Thursday of every month. Each month will showcase a lived experience guest who courageously comes on the POD to share their raw account of burnout to recovery and beyond or an expert guest who shares their knowledge and skills in burnout. All hope to assist others in preventing, responding and growing from burnout.
The only way this podcast will reach the four corners of this earth, to reach people in need is through the power of the people - you. So, you can pay it forward by liking, sharing, following, reviewing or leaving a comment. I will be forever grateful for your generosity in doing so.

Chronic Illness, Unrelenting Standards Schema and Burnout

Chronic Illness, Unrelenting Standards Schema and Burnout

Ep 26 allows the listener to learn from Clinical Psychologist Rebecca Black about two important areas associated with burnout: chronic illness - Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & Fibromyalgia, & Unrelenting Standards Schema. Schemas are mental structures of preconceived ideas, a framework representing aspects of the world, or a system of organising & perceiving new information. Rebecca blends her lived experience in both areas with her experience as a schema therapist working with people with chronic illnesses & chronically stressed states such as burnout. She shares her knowledge & tips on noticing & moving away from unrelenting standards & breaking the chronic stress cycles of living with chronic illness. She teaches us a sustainable way to live.
Guest: Rebecca is a clinical psychologist & coach who has spent the last 15 years of her life grappling to understand & overcome her chronic illnesses (CFS and fibromyalgia) & burnout experiences - a mission that she has accomplished! Rebecca is now passionately dedicated to helping other therapists & health professionals move away from these experiences and towards creating a sustainable career and life - one that is balanced, joyful, energetic, abundant & fulfilled - so they can in turn pass this gift of sustainable living on to their clients too.

Burnout to Recovery Experience: Educator, Manager, and Mother Part 2

    About Episode
Episode 25, Part 2 brings you the next chapter of April's work and burnout lived experience. In this second half, she moves into the education field again, but this time early education to help bring a balance to her life now that she is a mother. This time, she faces systematic issues such as role ambiguity/conflict, poor leadership and management, under-resourcing, and lack of training. If you haven't caught the first half of her story, it's worth checking out before delving into this chapter. April describes herself as a go-getter and a forever learner, and these aspects of her character start to shine in this chapter regarding what she is learning about her health and well-being at work. April shares in this episode where she is now and how she is crafting a way of life that works with her well-being. Her experience allows us to recognise and reflect on what might be happening to us and inspires and encourages us to make changes to support our well-being. No job/career is worth our health. Burnout to Recovery Experience: Educator, Manager, and Mother Part 1

    About Episode
Episode 25, Part 1 brings you the work and burnout lived experience of April Lauer. A story that spans over 20 years with the ebbs and flows of burnout as she comes up against several systemic issues that clash with her values, interests and needs. From a primary school teacher at the tender age of 21, navigating the world as a young adult, to taking a leap of faith into a new career, leaving teaching behind and experiencing both government and private sector positions that have given her wisdom in what works and doesn't work for her. Listen in to see what these commonly found system factors were that impacted her mental health and how she navigated through it. Her story is so rich that I have split it into two parts. Part 2 will be release two weeks after this episode. Her experience allows us to recognise and reflect on what might be happening to us and inspires and encourages us to make changes to support our well-being. No job/career is worth our health. Thanks, April, for your generosity and authenticity.
