Just listened to the Aaron Dessner interview as a National fan and loved it. A genuine intelligent conversation where I learned a lot, delivered in a way that’s more like a conversation with a new friend. Thank you!

As a huge Chilis fan the 4 episodes were a fantastic listen, great to hear them back together and making new music again. Love the chats being so informal and relaxed with Rick covering some great topics old and new. 10/10

Great podcast, as a complete music geek this really excites my ears! The interview and interviewee seem to be in great synergy with each, not in anyway linear or mundane A lovely selection of guests, most of which I owe loads of their LP’s so wonderful to hear them digging’ their craft and waxing lyrical about their passions. Keep up the good pod!

This is the best podcast on music. The interviews are like eavesdropping on late night fireside chats with all your favourite people in music. The Booker T and T Bone Burnett episodes were my favourites as well as Robbie Robertson episode.

In general a really good podcast - entertaining, funny and smart. But the episode with Flea from the Chilli Peppers is beautiful. What a great guy. And not a bad bass player too!
If you love music, this is the place.

This podcast is exactly what was missing in podcast world. Rick Rubin is a beautiful human and his ability to ask the right questions and his story telling is amazing. His recent conversation with Andre 3000 is one of the GOAT episodes of any podcasts. Mad respect for Andre 3000 for showing and talking about his vulnerability. Wish him all the best and I hope he’ll find his peace to create again.

I genuinely look forward to this podcast each week, the real talk on all things music, the inspirational stories and performances, Eminem, Nile Rodgers and of course, el hefe - Rick Rubin, all wrapped up in a bow by Malcolm Gladwell. All I can say is, thank you, and can we get another 6 seasons???
Just a collection of interviews

When this podcast was conceived it seems to me that Gladwell et al. expected that it would be similar to the music episodes of Gladwell’s fantastic Revisionist History podcast. There’s one on the song Hallelujah, one on Bobby Braddock and one on Elvis’ Are You Lonesome Tonight to name a few. Each of these episodes digs deep into a small niche - the history of one song usually - and Gladwell tells the story so well. As you can tell from the original Eminem episode of this podcast, when putting this together it seems Gladwell had a similar vision - take a music legend and tell a story using elements of their catalogue. This format works because we, the listener, get a new insight/perspective on an artist or song which we may well already have known. The assumption here is there must be countless great stories to tell about certain songs or projects. It seems the reality is not so simple. Rather than an in-depth look at a certain character in the music industry which is carefully crafted to tell us the story behind some of their greatest work, we get a set of interviews with living legends. Don’t get me wrong, these are good interviews. The problem is that they are just that. Where is the analysis? Where is the story that Gladwell is usually so good at weaving into his narrative? It’s somewhat there in that the interviewer (often not Gladwell himself) asks questions about songs in chronological order, but beyond that it’s really just another interview, and there are countless interviews of each of these stars out there. What made the Revisionist History music episodes so good was the way that Gladwell span you a yarn and analyzed each of the Greats through their songs and histories. Unfortunately we do not have more of the same. Listening to great musicians tell you about their greatest hits is definitely a worthy listen, but it’s a long way from what I was expecting from this podcast.
