    Introducing: Switched On Pop

    Introducing: Switched On Pop

This week on One Song, we’re sharing another music podcast that LUXXURY and Diallo both love. It’s called Switched On Pop, and it’s about the making and meaning of popular music, hosted by musicologist Nate Sloan and songwriter Charlie Harding.

The episode we’re sharing focuses on the fact that the first half of 2024 has been for the “pop girlie.” It seems like every major artist who’s dominated the discourse this year has been a woman, ostensibly making music about what it means to be a woman. There’s Camila Cabello's "Chanel no.5,” Lorde and Charli XCX working out the labyrinth of emotions that come with female friendship on the “Girl, so confusing” remix, and Sabrina Carpenter’s ode to the female ego, “Please Please Please." On this episode, Charlie, Nate, and Reanna – with some insight from journalist Ilana Kaplan – unpack these tracks at length, exploring what these artists are saying about femininity, and by extension, themselves.

Missy Elliott's "Work It" with Punkie Johnson

Missy Elliott's "Work It" with Punkie Johnson

On this special re-run, Diallo and LUXXURY are joined this week by comedian and friend of the pod, Punkie Johnson. Together, they go on a quest to flip it and reverse it and unpack the many layers of samples and interpolations that went into Missy Elliott’s 2002 banger, Work It. Come for the badonkadonk, stay for the obscure Paul Simon sample.

The song Work it is the first single from Missy Elliot's 2002 album Under Construction. Stems, interpolations and sampled songs from Peter Pipe by Run-D.M.C, The Request Line by Rock Master Scott and more. Music genres: Hip hop, R&B, progressive rap, Female Rappers.

Love from London!

Such a great podcast to listen to that isn’t too overly preachy on the musical front!!! As a musician it’s nice to hear other musicians just fool around with their instrumental and samples lol 🩷

Quest love on Public enemy’s ‘Cold lamping’

Great show as always! Lots of stuff you know.. lots of stuff you don’t! Presented by the always fun hosts. As this whole show is about nerding out, it would be remiss of me not to point out a few corrections -this is a safe space I hope.

I’d like to thank the ‘oracal’ that is Quest love for gifting the UK with a whole new subculture called ‘Northern Funk’. Apparently championed by Norman Cook! Who knew? Perhaps he meant Northern soul ( Cook being a big fan) That really started in the mid seventies UK and was a scene of populated by young working class kids. Whole other podcast. By my estimation, Norman Cook was about 10 years old then- so a true child musical savant apparently. Didn’t the Roots live in the UK for a while?

Also the connection between Spice girls Mel B and public enemy is that Eddie Murphy and Chuck D were friends before Public Enemy. Murphy went on to Marry and divorce Mel B. There single Wannabe doesn’t sample any of James Brown’s fantastic drummers.

All show are definitely worth you ear time. Enjoy!

Thanks guys

Open your ears!

This podcast is definitely a must for lovers of music. I just came across this podcast and simply just enjoy the enthusiasm and knowledge Diallo and Luxxury put into each episode. I absolutely love hearing the isolation of each instrument and vocals that has contributed to make any of the songs played a classic; all the while the hosts give you tidbits of analysis as they breakdown the song. As I love listening to my favourite songs across many genres I love hearing the nuances that I can pick up as I play them over again, but this podcast has already and most definitely got me to open my ears and take more notice to how a song has come together, carefully listening to each vocal and instrument that makes me appreciate the song even more than I thought I did. Thank you!
