    Guest Bio: Dane Thomas, PA-C, is a board-certified physician assistant with over 13 years of clinical experience. He graduated from Nova Southeastern University with his Masters in Medical Science and Physician Assistant Studies. Since graduating, he has spent most of his career educating, managing, and treating patients in oncology and hematology. He is passionate about educating clinicians and students in all aspects of medical oncology and hematology. He has served as a clinical preceptor for several PA and NP programs in Texas and Florida. Additionally, he has spoken at several Advanced Practice Provider conferences throughout the country on hematology and oncology-related topics. Furthermore, he serves as a peer reviewer for hematology and oncology-related articles for the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Dane is currently practicing in outpatient medical oncology and hematology in Dallas, Texas.

    Gaining Health host, Karli Burridge, shares a few exciting updates in the field of obesity medicine and interviews Dr. Jamy Ard, The Obesity Society (TOS) President, about his personal and professional experience.  Listen as Dr. Ard shares about the positive changes in obesity care treatment, and new research they have currently underway.

    Bio:  Dr. Ard is professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Prevention in the Division of Public Health Sciences, co-director of the Weight Management Center and medical director of medical weight management at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC. He is also the current President of The Obesity Society.  In October 2021, Dr. Ard was elected as a member to the National Academy of Medicine. Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.  Dr. Ard conducts research in clinical strategies to treat obesity and associated risk-factor modification. He also focuses on health disparities and ways to better engage African Americans in effective obesity treatment and research programs. He is a graduate of Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC, where he earned his medical degree. He also holds a bachelor’s of science degree in biology from Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA.

    Join host, Karli Burridge, as she discusses how Dr. Deborah Horn got started in Obesity Medicine, and what she sees coming up in the future of Obesity Medicine practice.  What research is underway to help us understand long-term obesity treatment results and what type of "target" should we be aiming for with patients' care?  What are the positive and negative trends right now around Obesity Medicine practice? 

    Bio:
    Debbie Horn, DO, MPH
    Dr. Horn is the Medical Director of the UT Center of Obesity Medicine and Metabolic
    Performance (COMMP), in the Department of Surgery at the McGovern Medical School, where she is also an Associate professor and the Fellowship Program Director of the Clinical Obesity Medicine and Metabolism Fellowship program.  She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine, a Founding Member of the Obesity Medicine Fellowship Council, a Co-Lead on the Obesity Medicine Education Collaborative, and a Clinical Faculty and member of the Education Management Task Force, World Obesity Federation, as well as a Past President of the Obesity Medicine Association.  She has won numerous awards for her work in obesity, including Obesity Specialist of the year multiple times!

    She graduated college from the University of Texas at Austin. She completed her Master’s of Science in Exercise Physiology at the University of Colorado at Boulder and her medical degree at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her Preventive Medicine residency at the University of South Carolina and her Family Medicine residency at the Methodist/Cornell program in Houston. Dr. Horn also holds a Master’s of Public Health and Physical Activity from the University of South Carolina.

    Nina Crowley, PhD, RD, LD advocates for effective communication, a patient-centered approach, and improved access to care for people with obesity. After 16 years as a dietitian and Program Coordinator with the Medical University of South Carolina’s Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program, she has recently joined Seca’s Medical Body Composition and Bioimpedance Analysis Division as the Professional Affiliations and Education Manager.   Nina partners with healthcare providers and organizations to provide education and support for using body composition analysis as an outcome. Nina holds her doctorate in Health Psychology from Walden University, her MS in Health Care Policy and Management from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and her BS in Nutrition Science from Cornell University. Dr. Crowley has authored publications on binge eating and food cravings in bariatric surgery patients and enjoys presenting on weight recurrence, obesity stigma and weight bias, and the importance of careful language for impactful communication. This is such an amazing podcast!! I love the interviews with obesity clinicians and leaders. Their stories and entrepreneurial spirit are inspiring to those who are new to obesity medicine and to those of us who have more experience. And What's Up Wednesdays give me all the latest news in obesity medicine while I'm commuting.I can't wait to see what's coming up next!
