Numb, Avoid, Repeat: Our Favorite Emotional Mistakes

To unlock this and ALL the subscribers-only episodes with real clients and conversations, join us at georgiefear.com/podcast. Let's be honest, life is hard and adulting didn't come with a feelings manual. So we all invent our own. And some of those coping strategies are, well, a little unhinged. In today's episode, we're talking about emotionally messy coping. The stuff we do, not because it actually helps, but because it feels like it helps in the moment. We'll cover some of the most common unhealthy coping strategies like emotional avoidance, misdirected anger, obsessive control over food, self-blame, intellectualizing emotions, projection, and rationalization, to name a few. These are all very normal, very common attempts at coping. The problem isn't that you've done them, it's that they don't actually help your nervous system calm down or help you process the root of what's going on. Thankfully, supporting people towards more effective coping tactics is what we do best. If you hear yourself in some of these examples, you're in good company. And, if you need some support with these things, we are happy to help!
