    In Episode 105, we are fortunate to join Kate Georgiadis to discuss her journey from Greek professional volleyball player to high profile New York City personal trainer. Kate takes us through her journey from high performance volleyball athlete to working in one of the most competitive personal training environments in the world. She has developed an intense and enthusiastic training approach that fits in with the competitive atmosphere created by her colleagues, but also achieves consistent and timely results for her clients.

    Kate Georgiadis is a Certified Personal Trainer and the General Manager of Hype Gym, a Private Training Facility based in New York City. Kate is a professional volleyball and beach volleyball player and has been in the fitness industry for more than 10 years. She also holds a master’s degree in special education. Kate works with a range of individuals from youth to the elderly. She also has significant experience working with athletes in the sports of volleyball, basketball, soccer and tennis. Kate’s continuing education background has helped her to develop a comprehensive training methodology that brings the best out of her general population clientele.

    Episode 104 - Brandon Marcello: Where Are We With Wearables?

    In Episode 104, we speak with Brandon Marcello about the broad topic of wearable technology. Every few months, new wearable consumer products enter the market with lots of hype and promises around changing your life and improving your fitness. But are companies over-promising and under-delivering on their wearable technology? What are some of the more reliable and valid products? Can wearable technology make a difference in the quality of your workout and the overall user experience? Are wearables a good substitute for standard medical testing? These questions and many more are discussed with Brandon in this episode.

    Brandon Marcello is a recognized author, researcher, and international presenter, he routinely speaks around the world on a number of topics pertaining to elite-level performance. His work appears regularly in numerous journals, textbooks, and periodicals. He also has served as a consultant to U.S. military, many Division-I programs, International Sports Federations, as well and Adidas, Under Armor and Nike. Marcello holds a PhD in sports nutrition from Baylor University, and a MS and BS in Exercise Science from Marshall University. A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Tactical Strength and Conditioning Facilitator (TSAC-F) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Marcello is also recognized as an RSCC*E by the same organization. He holds two certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) and Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES). Additionally he also maintains two certifications through U.S.A. Weightlifting.

One interesting project of note is the barn structure that Don is building in his backyard in Long Island, New York. COVID-19 has created a pivot opportunity for Don to provide his services and knowledge from home in a specially designed structure for training, teaching and spending some quality time with friends and family. They discuss the features of the new structure and some of the possible uses moving forward. We will be sure to track the progress of the project and possibly publish some podcast content from the Saladino Barn in the latter part of 2021.

    Episode 102 - Fernando Reis: Championship Level Olympic Weightlifting

    In Episode 102, we have an in depth discussion with Fernando Reis, discussing his training and the road to the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Fernando talks about when and how he started training in the sport of Olympic Weightlifting, as well as some of the other sports he participated in as a young athlete. We discuss the intricacies of training and competing as a world class level Olympic Weightlifter and how important it was to develop his technical expertise from a very young age. Fernando talks about the equipment he uses and how his technique, training and recovery methods have changed over the years as a world class competitor. His upcoming competitions are the Pan American Weightlifting Championships in the Dominican Republic and the Olympic Games in Tokyo, and talk about his preparations for both those events.

    Fernando Reis competes as an elite level Olympic Weightlifting at the 105kg+ weight class for Brazil. He won the bronze medal at the 2020 Junior World Weightlifting Championships. This was the first World Championship medal for Brazil at any age group, gender or weight class. He won the gold medal for the 2011 Pan American Games, and has placed 11th and 5th at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games respectively. He repeated as the gold medalist for the 2015 Pan American Games and then finished 10th at the 2015 World Weightlifting Championships, breaking the snatch and clean and jerk records for Brazil. In 2018, Reis won the bronze medal in the World Weightlifting Championships – the first medal for Brazil at this event. In 2019, he won his third consecutive Pan American Games gold medal in his weight class.

    Episode 101 - Joel Totoro: Supplementation for Health and Performance

    In Episode 101, we meet up with Joel Totoro to talk sports nutrition and supplementation. One of first questions we had was how does one choose a high quality supplement company for your health, nutrition and performance. We find out through Joel that a good deal of effort goes into selecting high quality ingredients for supplement product to make sure the customer gets the best and safest formulations for their needs. The products must be tested regularly for everything from pesticides to heavy metals to banned substances. Having researchers, medical doctors, naturopaths and registered dieticians as part of the team that all contribute to the development of high quality supplements is essential in this day and age. We discuss the use of supplements with young athletes and the key supplements that should be taken by adults to address typical deficiencies and provide a boost where possible. Other topics covered included hydration requirements to address cramping, supplementation needs when recovering from injuries, optimal protein sources, vegan options for protein, creatine use and nutritional advice for those of us that are getting older.

I cannot praise this podcast enough for sharing the RIGHT message when it comes to overall health and wellness! I love how they are consistent with their message that you have your own unique needs when it comes to a workout program, a nutrition program, and practices that you should add into your daily life. What works for others won’t necessarily work for you. They are committed to providing the information you need to step back and evaluate your own life. They also provide the tools to help you adjust your approach and continue to progress on your wellness journey. Small, manageable steps are the name of the game for long term success and a higher quality of life.
