    99 Years: Episode 1

The slogan for the state of Maine is, “the way life should be.” Known for lobsters and lighthouses, the state is also known for something else. Maine is the whitest state. And that’s not an accident.

The reason involves Presidents and robber barons, a forgotten time of Black American progress and a nation-wide conspiracy to help the south rise again.

But this isn’t just a chronicle of racial struggle or a tale of lost histories. It’s a story about black experience and what happens when people try to account for the past.

Illuminating show!

Sam James is a genius and a treasure, and Maine is lucky to have him! This series, while ostensibly about historical racism in Maine, can teach us all about systemic racism in the whole country.

Great series!

I learned so much from this series, and have been referring back to it constantly in these past few months as our country once again gets swept by “Jim crow” tactics disenfranchising voters and empowering state legislatures to run cities against their will. Just look at Jackson Mississippi or now Nashville Tennessee. Thanks so much for revealing this history !
