Season 2 - Episode 10 - Darrin Dick - The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry

Season 2 - Episode 10 - Darrin Dick - The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry

    Hey Uncommon leaders, welcome back!
On today’s podcast, I interview Darrin Dick, the campus pastor for Newspring church in Myrtle Beach, SC.  I brought Darrin on to discuss a book that he suggested to me recently titled the Ruthless Elimination of Hurry. Darrin and I discuss how he learned about the book, the people who shared and poured into his life and some of the habits he is working to implement to eliminate hurry in his, his family's and his team’s life!
    ·        One of the quotes that made me smile the most was “You can either Sabbath, or Sabbath is coming for you!”
    ·        He said that it is hard to grow as a leader if you don’t cultivate a love for reading
    ·        He talked about some cool habits he is trying to reduce hurry such as putting his phone in airplane mode for blocks of time, parenting his phone by putting it to bed in its own room each night and my favorite, choosing an accountability partner to screen shot your phone usage each day or week to make sure we are keeping our commitments.  Who wants to be my accountability partner for that?

Here is a link to the video that Darrin mentioned:  Unforgotten

Season 2 Episode 9 - Scottie Pennington - Do the Right Thing, Even when nobody is watching

Season 2 Episode 9 - Scottie Pennington - Do the Right Thing, Even when nobody is watching

Welcome back to the Uncommon Leader podcast.  I've got another great conversation to share with you from a leader I've worked with before. And I believe you're going to appreciate this leader's journey.

Scottie Pennington is the vice president of operations at metal source in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Scottie's a leader that, like many of us, has seen his share of ups and downs in his career, both professionally and personally. I truly appreciate how Scottie shares openly about his battles with pride, the impact that his wife, his family, other mentors, and his faith have had on his journey and a lot of other great stories.

You're going to get a ton out of this interview.  Get your pen and paper ready to take notes!

Here are just a couple of my takeaways:
    ·        At some point in the journey to Uncommon, you will have to learn to give more that you get
    ·        Start healthy habits at a young age… it really does get tougher as you get older!
    ·        Do the right thing, even when no one is looking.
    ·        As leaders, we are there to serve others
    ·        Use the gifts that you’ve been given to help others!

Season 2 Episode 8 - Andy Johnston - Former Director, Clemson University Football Operations on Leadership, NIL, and the Three Critical 'Abilities' for success

Season 2 Episode 8 - Andy Johnston - Former Director, Clemson University Football Operations on Leadership, NIL, and the Three Critical 'Abilities' for success

Hey listeners, Welcome back to the Uncommon Leader Podcast. Recently, I got the chance to interview the former Director of Football Operations for Clemson University, Andy Johnston.  Andy oversaw the day-to-day operations of the Clemson football program from 1997 through 2015 under famous coaches, Tommy West, Tommy Bowden, and Dabo Swinney.  Prior to his football operations career, Andy was the women’s tennis coach for 15 years at Clemson and guided his squads to five consecutive ACC titles, 12 Top-25 finishes, and six NCAA tournament appearances.  His 254 wins list him as one of the winningest coaches in any sport at Clemson.  It was this success and his leadership ability in tennis that led to the opportunity in football, a sport he had never played in his athletic career.

I love Andy’s authenticity throughout this interview and his story-telling ability kept me smiling throughout.  You’re gonna learn a lot from this interview.  Andy shares some leadership stories as well as his take on the current 'slippery slope' of NIL and the transfer portal and their affect on college sports and athletes' character development.

    A few takeaways for me:

    ·        He challenged his daughter with three ‘abilities’ to be successful: Dependability, Reliability, Accountability
    ·        To succeed in a new sport with new leaders, he had to gain the confidence of his leaders.  He did this through hard work, studying his job, and being organized.
    ·        His mentors instilled in him the importance of hard work – “The more you sweat in peace time, the less you sweat in war time.”
    ·        His mantra – “Right is right – even if no-one is doing it and wrong is wrong – even if everyone is doing it… so, Do What’s Right” is simple and powerful and as he said, if we just did this, the world would be a better place.
    ·        Lastly, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

Season 2 Episode 5 - Keith Murphy on relationships, disciplines, and starting the day for success!

Season 2 Episode 5 - Keith Murphy on relationships, disciplines, and starting the day for success!

Welcome back to the Uncommon Leader Podcast.  I'm excited to share with you a recent interview that I recorded with a lifelong learner,  Keith Murphy. He is the executive director of Strategy Deployment,  Organizational Development and Marketing at Atrius Health in Boston, MA.

Keith has a great story to tell today. I love how he links together a  challenge he had when he was young and how he has actually turned it into a strength of his today. He also talks about the disciplines he's implemented to help him to 'get into the groove' and overcome some of the languishing that has been a challenge for so many during the pandemic we've been going through the past couple of years.

He also talks about some of the challenges of his diverse role in leading down, across and up in his organization, all skills that require different techniques to be effective.

Stay in touch with Keith on LinkedIn.

Words to live by…

Listening to each of the podcasts helps me to identity that I can grow within myself, my career, and my business. Each individual podcast reflects on something I never really thought about, but will begin doing because in listening it opened my eyes to new ideas and ways of thinking.

Podcast with Dave Campbell

What a great conversation. Dave hits it on the head…personal growth, small sacrifices to grow yourself and how to bring that to your team. I love the idea of the “team book club”. Great Podcast John Gallagher.
