    Episode 193: Dr Matthew Phillips

Thank you for tuning in for another episode of Life’s Best Medicine. Dr Matthew Phillips, upon completing his neurology training in Melbourne, realized that he had no interest in going the usual route of further specializing in a particular neurological disorder. After spending three years learning about a variety of therapeutic possibilities that he had never considered, he came to realize that metabolic strategies, particularly fasting and ketogenic diets, were promising therapeutic options for a range of disorders. Following this discovery, he re-entered the medical system by commencing work as a neurologist in New Zealand. There, with the help of his colleagues, he has been applying these therapies to a number of humanity’s most difficult neurological disorders in order to determine whether they are feasible, safe, and can make an impact in terms of helping patients.
In this episode, Brian and Matthew talk about using diet to treat neurodegenerative disorders, how gut health relates to neurodegenerative disorders, the ketogenic diet and Parkinson’s Disease, exogenous ketones, why people with Parkinson’s and Alzheimers tend to develop a sweet tooth, what cold water therapy and sauna therapy do for your body, the importance of social stimulation for health, why work-related stress is particularly insidious, why the healthcare paradigm in the West needs to change, the proper usage of drugs like in treating metabolic diseases, and common factors in patients with neurodegenerative diseases.
