If you’re a longtime Middleish follower you’ll know that we loathe the idea of making things hard on yourself simply because that’s the message presented by the health world. Do more. Go bigger. Commit or quit. All or none. These concepts make change hard. And we’re all about finding ways to make healthy changes doable and sustainable.

But what if the easy way isn’t as effective? How much of the hard do we need in our lives in order to invoke true, lasting and meaningful change?

There’s no “right” answer to these questions, but we’re taking them on anyway! Join us as we explore some of the ways short-cuts fool us into thinking we’re making meaningful changes. True to our love of nuance, we also share examples we’ve seen in practice where “easy” is in fact the best way to get to where you want to be.

Erin Green is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, recovering professional triathlete and owner of Erin Green Racing and Nutrition in Boise, Idaho.
