    💭‘’You can’t condemn epidural injections when there’s a 40% chance a patient will experience dramatic improvement within a week.’’ - Dr. Mark Laslett Our guest, Dr. Mark Laslett, PhD, NZRPS, Dip.MT, Dip.MDT, is a pioneer in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and the first physiotherapist to be registered as a clinical specialist (musculoskeletal) by the New Zealand Physiotherapy Board in 2014. With over 55 years of experience, Dr. Laslett was in continuous clinical practice from 1971 until April 2024. Although now retired from clinical work, he remains actively involved in research and postgraduate education. Since 1985, Mark has taught short courses internationally, initially as a senior international instructor for the McKenzie Institute International (1985–1998). From 1993 to 2004, he developed and taught his own upper and lower limb courses globally. In more recent years, his teaching has focused on the lumbar spine, pelvis, hip, and the science of clinical diagnostics. Dr. Laslett holds diplomas in Manipulative Therapy and Mechanical Diagnosis & Therapy and is an honorary life member of the New Zealand Manipulative Physiotherapists Association (NZMPA), Physiotherapy New Zealand, and the Swedish branch of the McKenzie Institute. Dr. Armijo-Olivo is the lead of the S-TEAM (STrengthening Evidence-based Physiotherapy And Musculoskeletal care) research program. This designation was awarded in 2016. She works in private physiotherapy practice in Kaiapoi, North Canterbury. With the University of Otago, she was awarded with distinctions; a Post Graduate Diploma in Health Sciences endorsed in Musculoskeletal Management in 2008; later a Master of Health Sciences, in 2012. She was awarded her PhD in 2019. Tracey has a passionate commitment to understanding persistent pain, including complex regional pain syndrome; how pain interacts with mental health; to improve well-being in the context of persistent pain; and to encourage the collaboration of physiotherapists and the broader interdisciplinary team in the management of pain. She currently chairs the Physiotherapy in Mental health specialist interest group with the New Zealand professional body.
