Olivia Munn's Breast Cancer and the Test that Saved Her Life

Olivia Munn's Breast Cancer and the Test that Saved Her Life

In this episode, actress, activist, and author Olivia Munn gives a heart-wrenching account of her experience undergoing a double mastectomy for breast cancer just one year after giving birth to her son, whom she shares with partner John Mulaney.

In 2023, Olivia Munn started the year with a routine mammogram and genetic testing for 90 cancer genes. Despite negative results, Dr. Aliabadi, who delivered Olivia’s baby, calculated Olivia’s lifetime risk of breast cancer to be high and encouraged additional testing. This further assessment ultimately saved Olivia’s life.

Two months after her negative mammogram, Olivia was diagnosed with luminal B, an aggressive form of cancer in both breasts.

Dr. Aliabadi, who similarly had a double mastectomy and breast cancer that was initially missed, explains how Olivia’s cancer alluded initial testing. The conversation turns to Olivia’s determination to live for her young child, the aftermath of being extremely candid about her cancer battle online, and the armor needed to face the unimaginable.

Why Diets DON'T Work: Elyse Resch on Intuitive Eating

Why Diets DON'T Work: Elyse Resch on Intuitive Eating

Have you ever wondered why diets don't work? We're sitting down with sought-after nutrition therapist Elyse Resch, co-author of the acclaimed bestseller Intuitive Eating, and the nutritionist who cured Mary Alice's relationship with food to discuss the science and psychology behind the Intuitive Eating method. We'll break down why diets don’t work and how reconnecting with our inner wisdom is the key to a healthy relationship with food.

In this episode of SHE MD, Mary Alice and Elyse Resch discuss deprivation and eating disorders, including orthorexia, an unhealthy obsession with eating “healthily,” going on to challenge the emotional components that drive us to see food in the binary of good or bad. Resch highlights the concept of food habituation, suggesting that regularly eating previously forbidden foods can reduce their power over you. The conversation turns to how children are influenced by their parents’ food choices and the best way to keep kids healthy without projecting or shaming.

With over four decades of experience, Resch advocates that you can be healthy at any size and stresses that trusting your body and giving yourself permission to eat will lead to intuitive balance.

Hysteria, Witchcraft, and Bikini Medicine — Dr. Elizabeth Comen Talks the Truth and Lies of Early Medicine

Hysteria, Witchcraft, and Bikini Medicine — Dr. Elizabeth Comen Talks the Truth and Lies of Early Medicine

Dr. Elizabeth Comen has dedicated her medical career to saving the lives of women. She’s a Memorial Sloan Kettering oncologist, a medical historian, and the author of “All in Her Head — The Truth and Lies Early Medicine Taught Us About Women’s Bodies and Why it Matters Today.”

In this episode, Mary Alice and Dr. Aliabadi get a crash course in the problematic history that has shaped women’s healthcare, from the catch-all-diagnosis of hysteria that persisted into the early 20th century to the “bikini medicine” keeping women’s healthcare limited today. Dr. Comen dives into the shift from midwifery to gynecology, as women healers became scrutinized for witchcraft and men paved the way for modern obstetrics. She shares findings from her extensive research, including how the desire to control women’s sexuality historically led to outrageous medical beliefs like the idea that scoliosis was caused by masturbation. Dr. Comen and Dr. Aliabadi discuss gender bias as it pertains to female physicians and feminine nurturing in medicine, and the shame they observe in patients who aren’t comfortable sharing symptoms and apologize for natural bodily responses, even in their final moments.

Women’s issues in medicine are typically underfunded, under-researched, and often misdiagnosed. Dr. Comen discusses the root cause of societal stigmas and lingering ignorance that shape women’s healthcare and our relationships with our own bodies. Don’t miss this fascinating episode of SHE MD.

The most informative podcast I’ve ever listened to

Thank you so much Dr.A for all the great information. I’ve had painful periods from age 12 even abdominal pain before that to the point that my parents took me to the hospital! My mom gave me painkillers injections as Dr recommended every month because oral pain killers didn’t work! The pain was and still sometimes is unbearable! I went to several gynecologists, they told me to take ibuprofen a week before and during my period, put me on birth control and even I mentioned them after I heard about endometriosis that I think I have endometriosis but they said that you cannot diagnose endometriosis unless you go through laparoscopy or surgery!!!! So disappointing! I’ve listened to your podcast and I have all the symptoms you mentioned! Thanks again and god bless you 🥰❤️🙏🏼💐
