Revealing how your experiences of love, loss and pain are deeply intertwined, neuroscientist Yoram Yovell sheds light on the surprising role of your brain's endorphins and opioid receptors to ease physical and emotional suffering — and shows how this connection could pave the way to new treatments for mental health and well-being.

How aerosols brighten clouds — and cool the planet | Sarah J. Doherty

How aerosols brighten clouds — and cool the planet | Sarah J. Doherty

Here's a conundrum: the same aerosol pollutants that harm human health also help cool the climate, says atmospheric scientist Sarah J. Doherty. Is there a way to clean up the air without warming the planet? Exploring the unintended consequences of reducing air pollution, she makes the case for a better understanding of marine cloud brightening — or intentionally adding sea salt aerosols to clouds over the ocean, which could reflect sunlight back into space and potentially reduce global warming.

Food expiration dates don't mean what you think | Carolyn Beans

Food expiration dates don't mean what you think | Carolyn Beans

Countries around the world waste huge amounts of food every year: roughly a fifth of food items in the US are tossed because consumers aren't sure how to interpret expiration labels. But most groceries are still perfectly safe to eat past their expiration dates. If the dates on our food don't tell us that something's gone bad, what do they tell us? Carolyn Beans shares how to prevent food waste. This TED-Ed lesson was directed by Anton Bogaty, narrated by Alexandra Panzer and the music is by Salil Bhayani, cAMP Studio.

Ted health podcasts

I enjoy the topics but can hardly bear to listen to even half an episode. Whose in your organization thought it was a great idea to place stupid annoying sounds effects? Is the person developing them a relative who needs a creative outlet?

Childish sound effects?!

I love TED talks and thought this one would surely be great if it provides ~10 minute talks on health related topics. However, there are such childish, cartoon-like sound effects constantly in the background! Who in the world thought this would be a good idea for an adult audience? It is so distracting, annoying and such a turn off. I very rarely leave negative reviews but I find it mind-boggling that someone would think these sound effects would resonate with an adult, TED-following audience. I just started the episode about food expiration dates and barely 1 minute in, I can’t take the sound effects anymore.

Voice work

Love the podcast listen regularly, but as I am finding with virtually all podcasts now that this media is becoming very popular, and very integrated into all of our daily lives, podcast hosts, and frequent guests need to do voice work. I realize that is something that does not usually fall in the realm of science and medicine, and it does fall in the realm of actors and performers, but it is so jarring and so grating to hear someone’s voice badly misplaced with glottal stop’s, nasally whiny resonance , throat muscles so tight and distracted that it is almost painful to listen to. I have stopped informative podcasts on this show a number of times, because the sound of the voices is so dreadful. There are many many options available for basic voice training. Please spread the word.
