The Patient-Doctor Dichotomy: Ben Bravery's Insights on Compassion and Connection in Medicine
In this episode of The Burnout Recovery Podcast, Jo interviews her guest this week, Ben Bravery, a doctor who shares his personal journey of being diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer and navigating the healthcare system as a patient. Ben's experience highlights the importance of compassion and empathy in the medical field and sheds light on the need for improvements in medical education to better understand the patient's perspective. Tune in to hear how Ben's diagnosis shaped his outlook on healthcare and his mission to bridge the gap between healthcare professionals and patients. The Patient Experience: "I'm still in the system as a patient, and I see myself almost as a, you know, doctor that, as a patient that gets to put on a stethoscope. I cannot feel the patient experience, but that doesn't mean that I don't sometimes forget. You know, the system is engineered in a way that these things are not meant to be a part of our Everyday practice..."— Ben BraveryBIO:Originally a zoologist and science communicator, Ben Bravery worked for the Australian and Chinese governments before being diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer at age twenty-eight. After undergoing eighteen months of cancer treatment, Ben decided on a career change. He became a doctor in 2018 and is now undertaking speciality training in psychiatry. Ben volunteers, advocates, writes and speaks about colorectal cancer, living with cancer, cancer in young adults, medicine and medical education, and is committed to advocating for change in Australia's healthcare system. His memoir, The Patient Doctor, was released in 2022.LINKS:https://www.hachette.com.au/ben-bravery/the-patient-doctor-how-one-mans-cancer-diagnosis-led-to-a-quest-to-put-the-heart-back-into-healthcare

Are burnout and silence connected? The case of junior doctors
Are burnout and silence connected? The case of junior doctorsShow Notes: In this episode of The Burnout Recovery Podcast, guest Victoria Lister opens up about the connection between burnout and employee voice in the medical profession. With a focus on junior doctors, Victoria explores the impact of the hidden curriculum, hierarchical structures, and cultural norms that discourage speaking up. Join Dr Jo Braid and Victoria Lister as they discuss the importance of empowering healthcare professionals to find their voice and create positive change in their workplace.Junior doctors will know they’re not alone – that the difficulties they face have been recognised and that people are working on this issue. Senior doctors can take action to change the status quo, creating environments in which speaking up is encouraged, the organisational climate is safe, and the culture is kind. As new professionals in elite professions, we are enculturated/socialised into those worlds. The narratives we are fed are very powerful. Develop awareness of what it is you are immersed in and be true to you.Resources:victoria@victorialister.comwww.linkedin.com/in/victoria-lister/www.hummingbirdpie.com/
