Catching Up with Kris Aadland

Kris Aadland is the owner of Aadland Dental, a dental practice in the Vancouver, Washington area. She is also a faculty member of Implant Pathway, a group that offers continued education that helps dentists learn everything they need to know about surgical placement of dental implants. Kris completed her undergraduate work at Oregon State University and went to Oregon Health Sciences University for dental school. She has always dreamed of running her own practice, and with hard work and focus, Kris realized this dream in 2009 - a year when many practices were closing shop and filing for bankruptcy. Today, Kris joins us to share what she’s been up to since we last had her on the show. She describes the transition she’s made when it came to reducing her working days and how she convinced herself that doing more isn’t the only way to grow. She explains the services her practice currently offers and why she’s still a bit anxious when it comes to tooth extractions. Kris also discusses how the pandemic allowed her to focus on her practice beyond the number of work hours she commits to every week. Learning from DSOs with Bryan Debowsky

Dr. Bryan Seth Debowsky is part of the DentFirst Dental Care team in Atlanta. He specializes in General Dentistry and obtained his degree at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Shortly after graduating from dental school, Bryan joined the US Air Force Dental Corpse and remained for five years where he developed his skills in surgical, restorative, and endodontic dentistry. After he left the Air Force in 2005, Bryan joined the DentFirst team where he currently practices as one of their core members. Today, Bryan shares the perspective of a DSO when it comes to supporting dental practices. He describes what led him to become a DSO, his experience in the Air Force, and why he chose to remain a DSO. The Four Scarce Resources in Any Business

Running a growing business requires plenty of resources, arguably much more than starting one. The only difference is, you already know what you’re doing once you’re in the growth phase, and the problem now has shifted to resource management. Just like any business, dental practices also have a scarcity issue when it comes to four key resources: Time, mental bandwidth, physical strength, and economics. How should a business owner manage these four key resources? Today, I discuss my thoughts on the four scarce resources in any business and what many business owners should focus on to manage them. I share what I think most practitioners get wrong when it comes to business efficiency and explain why the ultimate goal of a business owner shouldn’t be to get more patients. I describe what ‘survival mode’ is in business and why it’s not advisable to be hyper focused on survival. I also share the reason why the economics of a business should be the last priority. When she was an associate, she never had to take work home. As an owner, she pays herself less and takes home more stress. She is always thinking about the practice. [05:12] Never compare your journey with someone else's especially on social media. People portray their highlight reel on social media. [05:44] Ashley talks about challenges of running a practice that include juggling family and mom duties, leading a team of young females, and still wanting everyone to like her. [06:08] Erin has evolved over time. She does try to keep some separation with her team. [07:11] Erin always brings everything back to the patient. She also asks her team for their solutions when they come to her for problems. [08:54] Ashley knows where she wants to take her office. She struggles with investing in technology and taking on debt. [12:05] Sully delegates everything. He jumps in and figures it out. [13:27] Erin thinks dentists need to work on their mindset and empower their teams. Find each team member's strengths and empower them. [14:28] Break down what you need to do to get to the next step. [15:30] Erin is about to speak on stage, so she is going to leave the show. [16:30] Vinh's timeline is to buy into a practice in the next few years. Benefits of working with other dentist owners is that you aren't alone. He wants to have equity in multiple offices. [18:29] Sully's dad still practices. [21:38] Ashley can expand her offerings or bring other people on. She could calculate her annual patient value. Then focus on increasing that amount. [24:18] At Vinh's practice, they keep most everything in house. [26:07] They also offer payment plans or cash discounts. [28:30] Ashley was booked doing fillings all day. She is working on investing in her business. [32:41] The Cone beam is better for diagnosis. [33:50] Give people who pay up front a 10% discount. You can also do 3 payments over the timeline. [39:42] Ashley was losing on opportunity by pushing new patients weeks away. She has two full-time hygienists. Now she is struggling with giving them hours. [41:11] It's important to be honest with the team members and give them extra duties if they are flexible. [45:22] Eventually Ashley will build out her other rooms as she builds and expands her practice. [46:37] You have to have everything dialed in before you add people and rooms. Ravi Agarwal is a full-time, board-certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon at MedStar Hospital Center. He fulfilled his degree in dentistry at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry before moving to MedStar for his residency program. He specializes in corrective jaw surgery, facial trauma treatment, and jaw deformity repairs. His clinical approach emphasizes on the use of 3D treatment planning and makes each patient’s treatment unique and individualized. The Treatment Coordinator Experience with Crystal Pion

You can say a treatment coordinator is a lot like being a sales person, but instead of closing deals, they close dental procedures for patients as they are scheduled by dentists. Their role is to make sure the schedule is followed and every patient has a complete treatment plan. More than planning, they are also critical when it comes to bridging the communication gap between dentist and patient. Because of her innate skill set and time management skills, it wasn’t difficult to see how Crystal Pion would not only take charge of this role, but revel in it.
