ALMA Fragmented Source Catalogue in Orion FraSCO I Outflow interaction within an embedded cluster in OMC-2 FIR3, FIR4, and FIR5

ALMA Fragmented Source Catalogue in Orion FraSCO I Outflow interaction within an embedded cluster in OMC-2 FIR3, FIR4, and FIR5 by Asako Sato et al. on Wednesday 23 November We present a high angular resolution ($\sim1"$) and wide-field ($2'.9 \times 1'.9$) image of the 1.3-mm continuum, CO($J$ = 2--1) line, and SiO($J$ = 5--4) line emissions toward an embedded protocluster, FIR3, FIR4, and FIR5, in the Orion Molecular Cloud 2 obtained from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We identify 51 continuum sources, 36 of which are newly identified in this study. Their dust masses, projected sizes, and $\mathrm{H_2}$ gas number densities are estimated to be $3.8 \times 10^{-5}$--$ 1.1 \times 10^{-2} \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$, 290--2000 au, and $6.4 \times 10^{6}$--$3.3 \times 10^{8}\,\mathrm{cm^{-3}}$, respectively. The results of a Jeans analysis show that $\sim80\,\%$ of the protostellar sources and $\sim15\,\%$ of the prestellar sources are gravitationally bound. We identify 12 molecular outflows traced in the CO($J$ = 2--1) emission, six of which are newly detected. We spatially resolve shocked gas structures traced by the SiO($J$ = 5--4) emission in this region for the first time. We identify shocked gas originating from outflows and other shocked regions. These results provide direct evidence of an interaction between a dust condensation, FIR4, and an energetic outflow driven by HOPS-370 located within FIR3. A comparison of the outflow dynamical timescales, fragmentation timescales, and protostellar ages shows that the previously proposed triggered star-formation scenario in FIR4 is not strongly supported. Neural networks: solving the chemistry of the interstellar medium by Lorenzo Branca et al. on Tuesday 29 November Non-equilibrium chemistry is a key process in the study of the InterStellar Medium (ISM), in particular the formation of molecular clouds and thus stars. However, computationally it is among the most difficult tasks to include in astrophysical simulations, because of the typically high (>40) number of reactions, the short evolutionary timescales (about $10^4$ times less than the ISM dynamical time) and the characteristic non-linearity and stiffness of the associated Ordinary Differential Equations system (ODEs). In this proof of concept work, we show that Physics Informed Neural Networks (PINN) are a viable alternative to traditional ODE time integrators for stiff thermo-chemical systems, i.e. up to molecular hydrogen formation (9 species and 46 reactions). Testing different chemical networks in a wide range of densities ($-2 \log n/{\rm cm}^{-3} 3$) and temperatures ($1 \log T/{\rm K} 5$), we find that a basic architecture can give a comfortable convergence only for simplified chemical systems: to properly capture the sudden chemical and thermal variations a Deep Galerkin Method is needed. Once trained ($\sim 10^3$ GPUhr), the PINN well reproduces the strong non-linear nature of the solutions (errors $\lesssim 10\%$) and can give speed-ups up to a factor of $\sim 200$ with respect to traditional ODE solvers. Further, the latter have completion times that vary by about $\sim 30\%$ for different initial $n$ and $T$, while the PINN method gives negligible variations. The dark side of galaxy stellar populations II: The dependence of star formation histories on halo mass and on the scatter of the main sequence by Laura Scholz-Diaz et al. on Wednesday 23 November Nearby galaxies are the end result of their cosmological evolution, which is predicted to be influenced by the growth of their host dark matter halos. This co-evolution potentially leaves signatures in present-day observed galaxy properties, which might be essential to further understand how the growth and properties of galaxies are connected to those of their host halos. In this work, we study the evolutionary histories of nearby galaxies both in terms of their host halos and the scatter of the star-forming main sequence by investigating their time-resolved stellar populations using absorption optical spectra drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find that galaxy star formation histories depend on the masses of their host halos, and hence they shape the evolution of the star-forming main sequence over cosmic time. Additionally, we also find that the scatter around the z=0 star-forming main sequence is not (entirely) stochastic, as galaxies with currently different star formation rates have experienced, on average, different star formation histories. Our findings suggest that dark matter halos might play a key role in modulating the evolution of star formation in galaxies, and thus of the main sequence, and further demonstrate that galaxies at different evolutionary stages contribute to the observed scatter of this relation. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.11779v1

On the cosmic evolution of AGN obscuration and the X-ray luminosity function: XMM-Newton and Chandra spectral analysis of the 31 3 deg ^2 Stripe 82X

On the cosmic evolution of AGN obscuration and the X-ray luminosity function: XMM-Newton and Chandra spectral analysis of the 31 3 deg ^2 Stripe 82X by Alessandro Peca et al. on Tuesday 22 November We present X-ray spectral analysis of XMM and Chandra observations in the 31.3 deg$^2$ Stripe-82X (S82X) field. Of the 6181 X-ray sources in this field, we analyze a sample of 2937 active galactic nuclei (AGN) with solid redshifts and sufficient counts determined by simulations. Our results show a population with median values of spectral index $\Gamma=1.94_{-0.39}^{+0.31}$, column density log$\,N_{\mathrm{H}}/\mathrm{cm}^{-2}=20.7_{-0.5}^{+1.2}$ and intrinsic, de-absorbed, 2-10 keV luminosity log$\,L_{\mathrm{X}}/\mathrm{erg\,s}^{-1}=44.0_{-1.0}^{+0.7}$, in the redshift range 0-4. We derive the intrinsic fraction of AGN that are obscured ($22\leq\mathrm{log}\,N_{\mathrm{H}}/\mathrm{cm}^{-2}43$. This work constrains the AGN obscuration and spectral shape of the still uncertain high-luminosity and high-redshift regimes (log$\,L_{\mathrm{X}}/\mathrm{erg\,s}^{-1}>45.5$, $z>3$), where the obscured AGN fraction rises to $64\pm12\%$. We report a luminosity and density evolution of the X-ray luminosity function, with obscured AGN dominating at all luminosities at $z>2$ and unobscured sources prevailing at log$\,L_{\mathrm{X}}/\mathrm{erg\,s}^{-1}>45$ at lower redshifts. Our results agree with evolutionary models in which the bulk of AGN activity is triggered by gas-rich environments and in a downsizing scenario. Also, the black hole accretion density (BHAD) is found to evolve similarly to the star formation rate density, confirming the co-evolution between AGN and host-galaxy, but suggesting different time scales in their growing history. Reconstructing the extended structure of multiple sources strongly lensed by the ultra-massive elliptical galaxy SDSS J0100+1818 by A. Bolamperti et al. on Wednesday 30 November We study the total and baryonic mass distributions of the deflector SDSS J0100+1818 through a full strong lensing analysis. The system is composed by an ultra-massive early-type galaxy at $z=0.581$, with total stellar mass of $(1.5 \pm 0.3) 10^{12}$ M$_\odot$ and stellar velocity dispersion of ($450 \pm 40$) km s$^{-1}$, surrounded by ten multiple images of three background sources, two of which spectroscopically confirmed at $z=1.880$. We take advantage of high-resolution HST photometry and VLT/X-shooter spectroscopy to measure the positions of the multiple images and perform a strong lensing study with the software GLEE. We test different total mass profiles for the lens and model the background sources first as point-like and then as extended objects. We successfully predict the positions of the observed multiple images and reconstruct over approximately 7200 HST pixels the complex surface brightness distributions of the sources. We measure the cumulative total mass profile of the lens and find a total mass value of $(9.1 \pm 0.1) 10^{12}$ M$_\odot$, within the Einstein radius of approximately 42 kpc, and stellar-over-total mass fractions ranging from ($49 \pm 12$)%, at the half-light radius ($R_e = 9.3$ kpc) of the lens galaxy, to ($10 \pm 2$)%, in the outer regions ($R = 70$kpc). These results suggest that the baryonic mass component of SDSS J0100+1818 is very concentrated in its core and that the lens early-type galaxy/group is immersed in a massive dark matter halo. This is consistent with what found in other ultra-high mass candidates at intermediate redshift. We measure also the physical sizes of the distant sources, resolving them down to a few hundreds of parsec. Rarefied Broad-Line Regions in Active Galactic Nuclei: Anomalous Responses in Reverberation Mapping and Implications for Weak-Emission Line Quasars by Pu Du et al. on Wednesday 23 November Reverberation mapping (RM) is a widely-used method for probing the physics of broad-line regions (BLRs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). There are increasing preliminary evidences that the RM behaviors of broad emission lines are influenced by BLR densities, however, the influences have not been investigated systematically from theoretical perspective. In the present paper, we adopt locally optimally emitting cloud model and use CLOUDY to obtain the one-dimensional transfer functions of the prominent UV and optical emission lines for different BLR densities. We find that the influences of BLR densities to RM behaviors have mainly three aspects. First, rarefied BLRs (with low gas densities) may show anomalous responses in RM observations. Their emission-line light curves inversely response the variations of continuum light curves, which may have been observed in some UV RM campaigns. Second, the different BLR densities in AGNs may result in correlations between the time lags and equivalent widths of emission lines, and may contribute to the scatters of the radius-luminosity relationships. Third, the variations of BLR densities may explain the changes of time lags in individual objects in different years. Some weak emission-line quasars (WLQs) are probably extreme cases of rarefied BLRs. The CO 2 Profile and Analytical Model for the Pioneer Venus Large Probe Neutral Mass Spectrometer

The CO 2 Profile and Analytical Model for the Pioneer Venus Large Probe Neutral Mass Spectrometer by Rakesh Mogul et al. on Wednesday 23 November We present a significantly updated CO$_2$ altitude profile for Venus (64.2-0.9 km) and provide support for a potential deep lower atmospheric haze of particles (17 km and lower). We extracted this information by developing a new analytical model for mass spectra obtained by the Pioneer Venus Large Probe (PVLP) Neutral Mass Spectrometer (LNMS). Our model accounts for changes in LNMS configuration and output during descent and enables the disentanglement of isobaric species via a data fitting routine that adjusts for mass-dependent changes in peak shape. The model yields CO$_2$ in units of density (kg m-3), isotope ratios for $^{13}$C/$^{12}$C and $^{18}$O/$^{16}$O, and 14 measures of CO$_2$ density across 55.4-0.9 km, which represents the most complete altitude profile for CO$_2$ at 60 km towards the surface to date. The CO$_2$ density profile is also consistent with the pressure, temperature, and volumetric gas measurements from the PVLP and VeNeRa spacecraft. Nominal and low-noise operations for the LNMS mass analyzer are supported by the behaviors (e.g., ionization yields, fragmentation yields, and peak shapes) of several internal standards (e.g., CH$^{3+}$, CH$^{4+}$, $^{40}$Ar$^+$, $^{136}$Xe$^{2+}$, and $^{136}$Xe$^+$), which were tracked across the descent. Lastly, our review of the CO$_2$ profile and LNMS spectra reveals hitherto unreported partial and rapidly clearing clogs of the inlet in the lower atmosphere, along with several ensuing data spikes at multiple masses. Together, these observations suggest that atmospheric intake was impacted by particles at 17 km (and lower) and that rapid particle degradation at the inlet yielded a temporary influx of mass signals into the LNMS. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.12557v1

Unfortunately, the smallness of the available datasets makes it difficult to realize the level of performance one expects from powerful network architectures. In this paper, we investigate the use of data augmentation techniques on light curve data from to train neural networks to identify exoplanets. The augmentation techniques used are of two classes: Simple (e.g. additive noise augmentation) and learning-based (e.g. first training a GAN \cite{goodfellow2020generative} to generate new examples). Identifying the physical origin of gamma-ray bursts with supervised machine learning by Jia-Wei Luo et al. on Wednesday 30 November The empirical classification of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) into long and short GRBs based on their durations is already firmly established. This empirical classification is generally linked to the physical classification of GRBs originating from compact binary mergers and GRBs originating from massive star collapses, or Type I and II GRBs, with the majority of short GRBs belonging to Type I and the majority of long GRBs belonging to Type II. However, there is a significant overlap in the duration distributions of long and short GRBs. Furthermore, some intermingled GRBs, i.e., short-duration Type II and long-duration Type I GRBs, have been reported. A multi-wavelength, multi-parameter classification scheme of GRBs is evidently needed. In this paper, we seek to build such a classification scheme with supervised machine learning methods, chiefly XGBoost. We utilize the GRB Big Table and Greiner's GRB catalog and divide the input features into three subgroups: prompt emission, afterglow, and host galaxy. We find that the prompt emission subgroup performs the best in distinguishing between Type I and II GRBs. We also find the most important distinguishing feature in prompt emission to be $T_{90}$, hardness ratio, and fluence. After building the machine learning model, we apply it to the currently unclassified GRBs to predict their probabilities of being either GRB class, and we assign the most probable class of each GRB to be its possible physical class. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.16451v1
