    678. Who Gets to Choose a “Good Death”?

New York is the latest state to legalize medical aid in dying. Stephen Dubner speaks with the governor who signed the law, a Nobel Prize-winning economist, a death doula — and an ethicist who thinks the very idea is wrong.   SOURCES: Kathy Hochul, governor of New York. Suzanne O'Brien, death doula, founder of Doulagivers Institute. Al Roth, economist at Stanford University. Daniel Sulmasy, physician, philosopher, director of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University.   RESOURCES: Moral Economics: From Prostitution to Organ Sales, What Controversial Transactions Reveal About How Markets Work, by Al Roth (2026). "New York Moves to Allow Terminally Ill People to Die on Their Own Terms," by Grace Ashford (New York Times, 2025). The Good Death: A Guide for Supporting Your Loved One through the End of Life, by Suzanne O'Brien (2025). The Future of Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia, by Neil Gorsuch (2009).   EXTRAS: "Make Me a Match (Update)," by Freakonomics Radio (2023). Sign up here to pre-screen our new video show. One landed nearby. He sketched it, approached it, and ended up in the hospital. His burns were documented. His weight loss was documented. His radiation-like symptoms baffled more than a dozen doctors, including specialists at the Mayo Clinic. The Royal Canadian Air Force launched an investigation. So did the RCMP. So did the US Air Force. Nobody could explain what happened. The government eventually sealed the file. The same government, fifty years later, minted his story on a coin. It glows in the dark. This is the Falcon Lake Incident — Canada's most documented UFO case, and it's still unsolved. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

    South Africa's migrant deadline

For many undocumented migrants in South Africa, the past few weeks have brought uncertainty and fear about what lies ahead. South Africa is the continent’s most developed economy, attracting citizens from poorer countries seeking work. But it also has a high rate of unemployment – almost one in three are without jobs. Although (officially) foreigners make up some 6% of the population, many more migrants are believed to be in the country without papers. Protestors have told them they have until the end of June to leave, and some nations have already been repatriating their citizens. In our conversations, we bring together migrants to share their experiences of rising tensions. We also hear from people who have decided to return and South Africans who want an end to illegal migration. “For us to fix this country of ours, we have to secure our borders,” Olivier tells host James Reynolds. “People here illegally either they are criminals, or they are suffering in the process or they’re just getting a whole bunch of stuff for free and not contributing.”

War, God and the Islamic Republic

Since the outbreak of war involving Iran, Israel and the U.S. in late February 2026, Iranians have been living through months of fear, instability and profound uncertainty. A fragile truce came into effect on April 8, but by May 2026 ceasefire efforts were still under strain, with negotiations continuing and tensions in and around the region far from settled. In this edition of Heart and Soul, Emily Wither speaks to Iranians inside the country about how war, repression and disillusionment have reshaped their relationship with religion. For some, years of state control in the name of Islam — now intensified by the trauma of recent conflict — have deepened the divide between official religion and personal faith. Some still pray to God, but in intimate, private ways far removed from state doctrine. Others have drifted away from formal religious belief altogether, finding comfort instead in Persian poetry, music, mysticism and ancient cultural texts such as the Shahnameh. Through anonymous voices from inside Iran, the programme explores a quiet but profound spiritual shift: away from imposed religion, and toward more personal and self-fashioned ways of making meaning.

David Sullivan: Abuse Allegations, Silenced Media & a Countdown to 16

Why is the media afraid to mention this man? In this episode, I’m joined by journalist Matthew Steeples to pull back the curtain on one of the most powerful and untouchable figures in British media and business: David Sullivan. From his rise in the adult industry to his ownership of West Ham United and his significant influence within the BBC and Fleet Street, we explore why certain stories never see the light of day. Steeples breaks down the complex web of power, the "gagging orders," and the media's complicity in protecting elite interests. This is a deep dive into the shadows of the UK establishment you won't hear anywhere else. Cold Cases: Case 11: Borley Rectory

Danny and the team turn their attention to Borley Rectory, which has often been called the most haunted house in England. It’s a sprawling, spectacular story that spans more than 60 years and features mysterious messages scrawled on the walls, unexplained noises, and at least one phantom nun. The house became a noted paranormal hotspot soon after it was built in 1862, and was made famous by legendary ghost hunter Harry Price. But was he a meticulous paranormal researcher, or a showman who couldn't resist gilding the lily? And does the truth about Borley lie in the supernatural, or in the all-too-human stories of the families who lived there? Presented by Danny Robins Experts: Evelyn Hollow and Dr Ciaran O'Keeffe Story sections by Simon Barnard and Dale Shaw Research by Nancy Bottomley Special thanks to Sean O'Connor, author of The Haunting of Borley Rectory Filming and editing by Robb Leech Editing and sound design by Charlie Brandon-King Theme music by Katherine Priddy Theme co-produced by Jennifer Ann Keller Incidental music by Evelyn Sykes Commissioning executive: Paula McDonnell Commissioning editor: Rhian Roberts Produced by Simon Barnard and Victoria Lloyd A Bafflegab and Uncanny Media production for BBC Radio 4
