That's the part he can't explain to himself the next morning — that after a night like the one before, staying should have been unthinkable, and yet somehow it wasn't. The old woman by the hearth speaks first that evening, in a voice that isn't quite her own — low, patient, and far too amused for a stranger discussing a dead man's wife.
