AI Is Running Out of Power

I'm thrilled to share some fascinating insights from my latest Capitalist Culture® podcast episode with Haley Swank, Founder and Managing Partner of Solène Capital, an investment firm backing companies transforming the physical world through energy, intelligence, mobility, and autonomy. Haley brings a unique operator's perspective to venture capital. She co-founded FLÎKR Fire, bootstrapping the company to more than $15 million in lifetime sales without outside capital or paid advertising, before successfully exiting in 2022. This conversation explores entrepreneurship, venture capital, hard technology, founder resilience, and investing in the innovations shaping our future. Here are the highlights you won't want to miss: From Entrepreneur to Venture Capitalist • Haley shares how she built FLÎKR Fire from a garage prototype into a nationally distributed brand with more than 2,400 retail locations and $7.1 million in peak annual revenue. • Bootstrapping taught her financial discipline, capital efficiency, and the importance of building sustainable businesses rather than chasing growth at any cost. • Her transition from entrepreneurship to executive leadership in AI companies ultimately inspired her to launch Solène Capital. Investing in the Future of the Physical World • Solène Capital focuses on transformative opportunities in energy infrastructure, defense, space, robotics, mobility, autonomy, and applied intelligence. • Haley believes energy is one of the greatest constraints on AI's future growth, creating enormous opportunities in nuclear power, fusion, and next-generation infrastructure. • She sees autonomy as an inevitable technological shift with applications across numerous industries. What Separates Great Investors • Returns Are a Byproduct, Not the Goal: Haley believes successful investing starts with finding the right company at the right moment and creating meaningful value after investing. • Expertise Over Hype: Solène leverages experienced operators and industry specialists to evaluate technical feasibility, regulatory challenges, and commercial opportunities. • Conviction Requires Diligence: Rather than rushing into investments, Haley emphasizes deeply understanding businesses and educating investors about the opportunities and risks. What Makes an Exceptional Founder? • Execution Beats Charisma: Great founders demonstrate measurable progress, clear thinking, and the ability to adapt when circumstances change. • Resilience Matters: Haley looks for entrepreneurs committed to solving meaningful problems over the long term. • Communication Creates Opportunity: Technical expertise is essential, but founders must also communicate their vision effectively to investors, customers, and partners. Building a Different Kind of Venture Capital Firm • Haley wants Solène Capital to be more than a source of funding. Her goal is to provide strategic relationships, industry expertise, and access to opportunities that help portfolio companies succeed. • She believes the best investments create lasting value for investors while advancing technologies that meaningfully improve the world. Final Thoughts Great investing isn't simply about identifying promising technology. It's about understanding the people, markets, and infrastructure required to bring that technology to life. Haley's philosophy is a powerful reminder that when you combine disciplined investing, exceptional founders, and genuine value creation, financial returns become the outcome rather than the objective. He Trained GE's Top Executives. Here's What Actually Separates Great Leaders.

I'm thrilled to share some powerful insights from my latest Capitalist Culture® podcast episode with Jack Ryan, Founder and Principal of Jack Ryan Advisory and a global business leader with more than 35 years of experience building high-performing teams, developing executives, and transforming organizations. Jack spent 29 years at General Electric, including leading its world-renowned Crotonville Leadership Institute, before joining Rockefeller Capital Management as CHRO and later COO/CAO. During his tenure, Rockefeller grew from $17 billion to more than $160 billion in assets and expanded from 180 to over 1,500 employees. This conversation explores leadership, culture, executive talent, organizational growth, and the future of leadership in an AI-driven world. Here are the highlights you won't want to miss: Lessons From GE and Rockefeller • Great Leaders Are Developed: At GE's Crotonville Leadership Institute, Jack learned that leadership development happens through real business challenges, not just classroom instruction. • Culture Drives Performance: The strongest organizations combine shared values, accountability, and respect for different perspectives. • Speed Matters: Jack explains why smaller companies often outperform larger organizations when it comes to making decisions and taking action. Building High-Performing Leadership Teams • Talent Density Is Everything: For private equity investors and rapidly growing companies, having the right leaders in critical roles can dramatically influence enterprise value. • Hire for the Future: Leaders must be capable of executing tomorrow's strategy, not simply managing today's business. • Results and Relationships: Exceptional leaders deliver measurable outcomes while treating people with dignity and respect. Leading Through Uncertainty • Transparency Builds Trust: Drawing from his experience navigating the financial crisis at GE Capital, Jack emphasizes honest communication and decisive action during difficult times. • Focus on What's Important: Great leaders balance immediate challenges with long-term priorities rather than constantly reacting to what's urgent. • Integrity Is Nonnegotiable: Your credibility comes from consistently doing what you say you will do. AI and the Future of Leadership • Jack identifies three categories of work: human-led responsibilities, AI-augmented processes, and fully automated activities. • AI transformation requires more than technology. Leaders must understand how to redesign work, empower teams, and establish effective governance. • Jack also discusses a leadership diagnostic designed to evaluate whether executives possess the traits and capabilities needed to lead through AI transformation. Leadership Lessons That Last • Build an Abundance Mentality: Invest in developing talented people, even when their growth eventually takes them beyond your organization. • Lead With Humility: Jack shares how vulnerability, listening, and learning from others have shaped his leadership philosophy. • Inspire Discretionary Effort: The best leaders create environments where people genuinely want to contribute beyond what's required. Final Thoughts Great leadership isn't about titles, authority, or personal recognition. It's about building exceptional teams, making difficult decisions with integrity, and creating organizations where people can thrive. Jack's definition of success has evolved beyond professional accomplishments to something even more meaningful: making a positive difference in the lives of family, clients, and communities. The Success Cliff: Why the Habits That Built Your Company Are Killing It

I'm thrilled to share some powerful insights from my latest Capitalist Culture® podcast episode with Andy Walsh, a three-time founder with two successful exits, including bootstrapping a company to $10 million in annual recurring revenue. Today, Andy advises early-stage founders on growth, fundraising, go-to-market strategy, and brand positioning. He also hosts Startups Decoded, a top 2% global podcast with more than 850,000 downloads. This conversation explores entrepreneurship, scaling businesses, founder psychology, brand storytelling, and what it really takes to build lasting enterprise value. Here are the highlights you won't want to miss: From Startup to $10 Million • Andy shares how he bootstrapped a company to $10 million in recurring revenue by balancing multiple revenue streams, managing cash flow, and building strong operational foundations. • Two successful exits taught him the importance of founder alignment, smart legal structures, and preparing for acquisitions long before a buyer appears. The Founder Mindset • Conviction Is Essential, But So Is Curiosity: Great founders believe in their vision while remaining open to feedback that challenges their assumptions. • Growth often stalls when founders keep relying on the same strategies that made them successful initially. • Andy explains why exploring overlooked market segments can unlock opportunities competitors aren't pursuing. Building Brands That Create Enterprise Value • Great brands don't just sell products. They tell stories that create emotional connections and lasting differentiation. • Andy shares lessons from Airbnb, McDonald's, and Oatly on building recognizable brands in competitive markets. • Consistency and repetition matter. Your audience often needs to hear your message far more frequently than you think. Fundraising and Scaling Smarter • Raising capital isn't always the answer. Founders must understand their financials, cash flow, and growth potential before deciding whether outside investment makes sense. • Lead With Outcomes: Andy recommends spending less time presenting and more time having meaningful conversations with decision-makers. • Market validation, customer insights, and disciplined experimentation should guide growth decisions. Leadership, Culture, and the Future • Psychological Safety Matters: Exceptional leaders create environments where people feel comfortable contributing ideas and challenging assumptions. • Andy discusses the importance of mental health, self-awareness, and knowing when to ask for help. • Looking ahead, he sees significant opportunities in AI, robotics, and the resurgence of American manufacturing. Final Thoughts • Build With Purpose: Success isn't simply about revenue or exits. It's about creating value for shareholders, employees, and customers. • Stay Adaptable: The best entrepreneurs combine conviction with curiosity and continually evolve as their businesses grow. • Your Brand Is an Asset: Authentic storytelling, customer relationships, and consistent execution compound enterprise value over time. Ultimately, building a successful company requires more than a great idea. It takes discipline, adaptability, exceptional leadership, and the courage to keep learning. They Sold Status, Not a Credit Card (And Made $12.5 Billion)

I’m thrilled to share some powerful insights from my latest Capitalist Culture® podcast episode with Rich Smith, a CMO and behavioral scientist with more than 30 years of experience in marketing, leadership, and understanding why people make the decisions they do. This conversation explores behavioral science, persuasion, crisis leadership, brand building, and how AI is changing marketing and the customer experience. Here are the highlights you will not want to miss: Why People Really Buy • People often make decisions emotionally and rationalize them afterward. Great marketing connects emotionally first, then provides the rational justification. • Rich breaks down behavioral principles including confirmation bias, loss aversion, social proof, scarcity, and framing, and how each influences customers and leaders. • Social proof becomes especially powerful at the moment someone is deciding whether to buy because people want reassurance that others like them have made the same decision successfully. Building Brands That Break Through • Rich helped launch the first platinum bank card in the U.S., generating more than 7 million accounts and $12.5 billion in loans in under two years. • The lesson? Customers weren't simply buying another credit card. They were buying status. • Creating a new category can be far more powerful than trying to outperform everyone in an existing one. Leading Through Crisis • During the 2008 financial crisis, Rich helped navigate AIG through extraordinary uncertainty and later helped rebuild its brand. • His leadership lesson is simple: people hate uncertainty. Communicate frequently, transparently, and honestly, even when you don't have every answer. • Trust is built through authenticity, credibility, and consistently delivering on commitments. AI Is Changing the Customer • Rich distinguishes between "big M" marketing, strategy, and "little m" marketing, the tactics and execution. • AI can dramatically improve execution, but strategy, judgment, and creativity still require human leadership. • The bigger opportunity may not be using AI to make marketing departments more efficient. It is understanding how AI is fundamentally changing the way customers discover, evaluate, and buy products. Build a Customer Factory • Instead of spreading resources across every available marketing channel, Rich recommends deeply testing a smaller number of channels with enough scale to know what actually works. • Marketing leaders also need to translate marketing metrics into business outcomes that CEOs and CFOs understand. Final Thoughts The best marketing isn't about manipulating people. It's about understanding how people actually make decisions. As AI transforms how customers find information and make choices, the companies that combine behavioral insight, human creativity, proprietary data, and disciplined strategy will be positioned to adapt. And for leaders, one lesson remains timeless: understand your customer, communicate clearly, and build trust. Looking for Your Next A-Player Executive? He Ran Wahlburgers, Fought GameStop's Decline, & Says AI Will Take Your Job Before It Gives You a New One

I’m thrilled to share some powerful insights from my latest Capitalist Culture® podcast episode with Rick Varunza, President of GrowthFactor and a globally recognized advisor and CEO with decades of experience transforming and growing businesses across restaurants, retail, technology, and AI. Rick has led organizations from startups to Fortune 500 companies, with leadership experience spanning Panera, Wahlburgers, GameStop, Freight Farms, and more. This conversation explores business growth, differentiation, private equity, leadership, and why AI may be one of the biggest business transformations of our lifetime. Here are the highlights you will not want to miss: Build for the Customer • Enduring businesses start with genuine differentiation and customer obsession—not financial optimization. • Rick believes customer reviews, repeat traffic, and word of mouth are some of the clearest indicators that a concept truly resonates. Lessons from Panera & Wahlburgers • At Panera, Rick helped drive a strategy that included strengthening the core menu, expanding breakfast and catering, improving coffee, launching loyalty, and investing in marketing. • The result: net income quadrupled and the stock price increased from $41 to $134 during his tenure. • As the original CEO of Wahlburgers, Rick experienced firsthand why growth must be supported by the right operating model, market strategy, and leadership alignment. Growth for Growth’s Sake Is Dangerous • More locations don't automatically create more value. Great growth requires disciplined site selection, strong franchisees, and a repeatable operating model. • Rick also cautions leaders to carefully evaluate private equity partners. The best partner isn't necessarily offering the most money—it is the one aligned with the long-term value of the business. AI Is a CEO-Level Strategy • Rick believes AI strategy belongs with the CEO and board because AI isn't simply a technology initiative. It changes business processes, competitive positioning, and how value gets created. • Leaders should combine AI with proprietary expertise and data, pursue early wins, and continually adapt as the technology evolves. GrowthFactor and the Future of Site Selection • GrowthFactor uses AI to transform real estate site selection and management, allowing companies to analyze opportunities faster and interact with complex data using natural language. • For multi-unit businesses, better data and faster analysis can dramatically improve where—and how—they grow. Final Thoughts Great businesses don't win by blindly chasing growth. They win by staying differentiated, obsessing over customers, choosing the right partners, and adapting before disruption forces them to. Rick's definition of success brings it all together: leave the world better than you found it and use what you've learned to help others. Visit GrowthFactor to learn more about how Rick and his team are using AI to rethink real estate site selection and growth. Looking for Your Next A-Player Executive? Your Company Is Lying

I’m thrilled to share some fascinating insights from my latest Capitalist Culture® podcast episode with Phoenix Normand, Founder of OrgTruth and a veteran operator who has spent nearly 30 years inside companies including Square, Levi Strauss, Replit, Boom Supersonic, and Credit Suisse. Phoenix has served as the right hand to groundbreaking founders including Jack Dorsey, Blake Scholl, and Amjad Masad, giving him a rare perspective on what really happens inside organizations as they scale. Here are the highlights you will not want to miss: From Executive Assistant to the C-Suite • Phoenix shares what he learned working alongside some of the world’s most successful founders and why the Executive Assistant role can provide extraordinary access and influence. • He takes us inside Square’s rapid pre-IPO growth and shares his perspective on the early development of Cash App. Why CEOs Stop Hearing the Truth • As companies scale, information gets softened, delayed, and distorted before reaching the CEO. • Bad news often travels slowly, leaving leaders to make major decisions without the complete picture. • Phoenix believes the best CEOs prioritize data over opinions and surround themselves with people willing to tell them what they need to hear. The Idea Behind OrgTruth • Phoenix created OrgTruth to help CEOs see their organizations as they actually are, not simply as they are being reported. • By gathering signals across an organization and identifying contradictions, OrgTruth helps surface problems and risks that traditional reporting structures can miss. Building Better CEOs • Phoenix is launching The Vanguard Apex, an intentionally small cohort of 10 Series A and B founders designed to create candid conversations around the realities of leadership. • His goal isn't simply to help CEOs become more successful. It's to help them become more complete leaders and people. Success Beyond Business • Phoenix began competing in track and field at age 50 and became a highly competitive masters sprinter. • His definition of success goes beyond money or titles: being able to look in the mirror and feel good about the person looking back. Final Thoughts Truth is a competitive advantage. As companies grow, CEOs need better information, trusted people willing to challenge them, and systems that expose problems before they become crises. And ultimately, building a great company means little if you lose yourself in the process. Want to See Your Organization as It Actually Is? OrgTruth helps CEOs identify the signals, contradictions, and issues that may never reach them through traditional reporting structures. Visit the OrgTruth website to learn more. The $500K Franchise Secret That Turns Into 100% Cash Back in Year One

I’m thrilled to share some powerful insights from my latest Capitalist Culture® podcast episode with Bob Bernotas, a serial franchise entrepreneur, former franchise CEO, and advisor who has spent nearly 40 years helping business owners and investors navigate the world of franchising. This conversation explores franchise investing, unit economics, leadership, and how entrepreneurs can use the right franchise strategy to build wealth and greater freedom. Here are the highlights you will not want to miss: Bob’s Journey: • Nearly 40 Years in Franchising: Bob entered the industry with West Coast Video in 1986 and has experienced franchising from virtually every angle, including multi-unit ownership, executive leadership, and advising investors. • From Franchisee to CEO: His career eventually included leading a tanning salon franchise, giving him firsthand insight into what makes the relationship between franchisor and franchisee succeed. What Makes a Great Franchise • Win-Win Economics: The best franchisors understand that their success depends on their franchisees making money. • Unit Economics Matter: Bob encourages investors to look beyond exciting concepts and focus on ROI, margins, labor requirements, and sustainable cash flow. • Follow the Numbers, Not Your Passion: A franchise is an investment, and the economics need to work regardless of how much you personally love the product. Avoiding Franchise Mistakes • Be Careful with Food: Bob highlighted the challenges of thin margins, labor intensity, and operational complexity in many restaurant concepts. • Avoid the Bleeding Edge: Trendy technology and luxury concepts can create unnecessary exposure when economic conditions change. • Do Your Homework: Experienced guidance and real operational knowledge can be far more valuable than relying exclusively on online franchise portals. Building Wealth Through Franchising • Semi-Passive Ownership: The right franchise can create an additional income stream without requiring an owner to leave a successful career immediately. • Scale Strategically: Bob explained the differences between horizontal and vertical expansion and why the right growth strategy depends on the investor's objectives. • Build With the Exit in Mind: Personnel, positioning, systems, and economics all influence whether a franchise portfolio ultimately becomes a valuable asset. Final Thoughts • Franchising Is Not One Size Fits All: The right opportunity must align with your capital, risk tolerance, lifestyle, and long-term goals. • Economics Over Emotion: Great investments are driven by disciplined analysis rather than excitement about a brand. • Freedom Is the Objective: For corporate leaders and investors, thoughtful franchise ownership can provide another path toward cash flow, equity growth, and ultimately greater control over their lives. I hope these insights inspire you to listen to the full episode. There is much more in this conversation about franchise ownership, investing, entrepreneurship, and creating an off-ramp from corporate life on your own terms. Six Months Decide Everything

I’m thrilled to share some valuable insights from my latest Capitalist Culture® podcast episode with Sequoya Borgman, Founder and CEO of Borgman Capital, a seasoned private equity leader with more than two decades of experience in mergers, acquisitions, and value creation. This conversation explores private equity, leadership, culture, and what truly drives long-term business success. Here are the highlights you will not want to miss: Sequoya’s Journey: • From Public Accounting to Private Equity: Sequoya leveraged his accounting and transaction experience to build a career evaluating and growing businesses through acquisitions. • Hundreds of Transactions: His experience spans mergers, acquisitions, restructurings, and financings across public and private companies of all sizes. What Really Creates Value • People Over Numbers: Financials matter, but leadership quality and company culture ultimately determine whether an acquisition succeeds. • Culture Comes First: Borgman Capital evaluates cultural fit before making investment decisions because culture is difficult to change once a transaction closes. • Partnership Over Ownership: Rather than simply acquiring companies, the firm partners with founders who often remain invested and actively involved in the business. Private Equity Done Differently • Focus on the Lower Middle Market: Borgman Capital specializes in founder-owned businesses that are often overlooked by larger private equity firms. • Relationships Matter: Many of their best opportunities come from years of building trust rather than competitive auction processes. • Long-Term Thinking: The goal is sustainable value creation, not simply financial engineering. Advice for Founders • Don't Chase the Highest Price: The best buyer is often the one who will protect your employees, preserve your culture, and continue growing your business. • Prepare Before Selling: Reduce founder dependence, strengthen your leadership team, and eliminate operational risks before going to market. • Trust Is Everything: The strongest transactions begin with strong relationships. Leadership Lessons • Hire Great Leaders: Investors should never have to run the business themselves. If they do, they hired the wrong leadership team. • Servant Leadership Wins: Sequoya believes in leading through humility, transparency, and honest communication. • Focus Creates Results: Rather than chasing dozens of initiatives, exceptional companies execute one or two high-impact value creation strategies exceptionally well. The Future of Private Equity • AI as a Value Driver: Sequoya sees artificial intelligence becoming a significant source of enterprise value and competitive advantage. • Strong Culture Endures: Companies built on trust, accountability, and exceptional leadership consistently outperform over the long term. Final Thoughts • Great Businesses Are Built by Great Leaders: Leadership remains the single greatest driver of enterprise value. • Relationships Compound: Trust built over years often creates the best investment opportunities. • Legacy Matters: For Sequoya, success means keeping promises, honoring commitments, and creating lasting value for founders, employees, investors, and communities. I hope these insights inspire you to listen to the full episode. There is so much more depth in this conversation about private equity, leadership, and building businesses that create lasting value.
