E176 - Maro Itoje: The distinction between High Performance and Elite Performance

E176 - Maro Itoje: The distinction between High Performance and Elite Performance

Maro Itoje is a rugby union player, currently playing for Saracens and the England national team. Having joined Saracens at 16 years old, Maro shares how the kindness, manners and dedication of the senior players has shaped him. He discusses how his parents never pushed him to focus on rugby, so all of his motivation was internal.
Maro claims to not be the most talented player, rather his skillset is based on output and how hard he can work. This allowed him to take ownership of his commitments and efforts. Maro shares how rugby will never be his “true identity”, as it’s crucial for him to have varied interests and hobbies outside of rugby. He is currently studying for his Master of Business Administration at University of Warwick.
In this episode they discuss authenticity, what it means to be a cultural architect and the role trash talk plays in his life.

E175 - Sean Dyche: What Everton can expect

E175 - Sean Dyche: What Everton can expect

It’s been almost three years since Jake and Damian first sat down with football manager Sean Dyche. A lot has changed since that initial conversation, he is now manager of Everton FC. Sean left Burnley after a decade in charge of the team, keeping them in the Premier League for six seasons with a limited wage bill.
In this episode, Sean seeks to challenge the myths told about him. They delve deep into his managing style, how he individually assesses players to give them the best chance of being successful. They discuss how to focus on the opinions that matter, connecting with players as individuals and focusing on ‘positive realities’.

Damian shares his research on Japanese lessons for a happier life

Damian shares his research on Japanese lessons for a happier life

This week Damian shares his recent research into Japanese learnings including the concept of ‘Ikigai’, 'Kaizen', 'Wabi-sabi', 'Gaman’ and more - linking how these principles are reflected perfectly in our guests.

Ikigai was originally brought to our attention by the brilliant Rangan Chatterjee in episode 110 (https://pod.fo/e/115f19) from a book by Francesc Miralles and Hector Garcia.

‘Kaizen’, the Japanese term meaning change for the better or continuous improvement, is tattooed on the arm of rugby league legend Shaun Wane who we spoke to in episode 17 (https://pod.fo/e/259c4). But why is this concept so important to him?

Listen to the full episode to find out more about these excellent principles, how they have affected our guests and, hopefully, be an inspiration to you

Thank you for being part of our community! A place to raise each other up and inspire each of us to help introduce high performance into our own lives.

Some super inspirational guests

Excellent pace and structure. Great combo between the two hosts. Jono W was my fave sportsman podcast and Steven Bartlett fave overall. As a fan of Tony Robbins wide range of guests that offer unique insights, this has the potential to be the very best as the guest list grows. Best of luck with the project.

Refreshing

Super interesting guests and insightful questions, easy to listen to whilst working or out for a walk.

Please can you focus on having more females on, it’s very male heavy and there’s loads of high performance females out there!

Thank you

Hi Jake/Damian/Guests,

Thank you for for these podcasts which are hugely inspirational.

I’ve just set up a second company in football after selling my last one and continuing to work for them for 3.5 years. I’ve also had my 4th child in Jan and recently signed up for the VSI CEO in Sport Programme which means me travelling from Dubai to Manchester 9 times over the next year so I need all the help I can get! Keep up the great work!
