A place for conversations that young adults should be having

Can we talk about consent for a minute?

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! Consent isn't a blanket yes. And no one should have to be the "perfect victim" to deserve compassion. With the conversations surrounding the Cornell case and the growing "I Am Jane Doe" movement, I think it's time we talked about something beyond understanding consent. It's about how quickly we judge people who come forward about sexual violence. How we question what they wore, whether they were drinking, who they were with, their sexual history, and why they didn't react the way we think they should have. To everyone speaking up, sharing their stories, or quietly finding their voice, you don't have to earn your dignity. Consent is about choice. Compassion shouldn't depend on whether someone's experience fits the story we expected to hear. #IAmJaneDoe #ConsentMatters #EndVictimBlaming #SexualAssaultAwareness #WorkInProgressByElla #Psychology #SexualHarassment #SurvivorSupport

What happens when we're so sure we're right - Bias and Investigative tunnel vision

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! In this episode of Work in Progress, we're looking at the psychology behind our assumptions, confirmation bias, investigative tunnel vision, and why we sometimes become so convinced of something before we have all the facts, based on the Documentary American Nightmare (Netflix, 2024) We also talk about why people don't always respond to trauma the way we expect them to and why being aware of our biases matters so much, especially when our judgments can affect someone else's life. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Have you ever completely misjudged someone or had someone make assumptions about you? Disclaimer: This episode discusses kidnapping, sexual assault, and trauma. The psychological discussion is for educational purposes and does not constitute a clinical assessment of anyone involved.

Don't you feel like adulthood is harder now?

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! In this episode of Work in Progress, Ella sits down with her husband, Danny, to talk about what it actually means to be a young adult today and why so many Gen Zs and millennials feel like they’re working hard but still falling behind. They unpack changing ideas around resilience, burnout, work, money, home ownership, marriage, children, and the pressure to hit traditional “adult” milestones on a timeline that may no longer reflect the world we live in. This is not about deciding which generation had it harder. It’s a conversation about context: what has changed, what younger generations may be facing differently, where older advice no longer fits as neatly, and where young adults may still need to build more resilience, patience, and tolerance for discomfort.

Her story deserves more conversation | What Mica Miller’s Story Teaches Us

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! In this episode of Work in Progress, Ella reflects on the documentary Death of the Pastor’s Wife and the conversations it raises around control, coercive patterns, red flags, and why leaving unhealthy relationships can be so difficult. Please note: this episode includes discussion of emotional abuse, coercive control, unhealthy relationships, and suicide. This is not a legal analysis or a diagnosis of anybody involved. Instead, this episode is a conversation about the themes the documentary brings up, including the difference between care and control, how beliefs can sometimes be used manipulatively, and why questions like “why didn’t she just leave?” often miss the emotional reality of these situations. If this conversation brings up anything difficult for you, please consider reaching out to a trusted mental health professional or a local support service.
