Dr. Becky On Why Becoming A Mom Isn't Actually About Your Baby

I cried in the back of an Uber after my first dinner out post-baby. I'd had one and a half martinis (a mistake), I'd left my husband at home with the baby (he was thrilled for me to go), and I felt so guilty I genuinely couldn't stop sobbing. Mom guilt, right? That's what we'd call it. Except according to Dr. Becky Kennedy, clinical psychologist, founder of Good Inside, and probably the most followed parenting expert on the planet, what I was feeling probably wasn't actually guilt at all. It was something else, and almost nobody talks about it. This week she sat down with me to talk about the weeks of motherhood nobody warns you about. Why your thoughts the first weeks postpartum are mostly about you, not your baby (and why that's normal, not a character flaw). Why intrusive thoughts about your baby are a sign of how much you love them, not a sign you're dangerous. Why the doer identity you bring into motherhood is going to crash, and what to do when it does. Plus the reframe she dropped at the end of our conversation that I haven't stopped thinking about since: the sentence that starts with "I'm a good mom who..." and how it changes everything. EP 18 - Communication

Welcome back to another insightful episode of Parenting Untapped. In this episode, Allie and her dad Tony dive into one of the most talked-about—but often misunderstood—topics in every family: communication. We all believe we’re good at communicating, but what happens when we’re talking… without truly listening? Through a real-life situation about something as simple as cleaning a room, this episode uncovers how small misunderstandings can turn into frustration—and how both parents and teens often see the same situation very differently. From expectations and tone to timing and emotional awareness, this conversation highlights how easily communication can break down—and what both sides can do to improve it. In this episode, we explore: Why most family conflicts start with poor communicationThe difference between talking vs. truly listeningHow tone, timing, and expectations impact understandingWhy teens don’t always want solutions—they just want to be heardThe gap between a parent’s “big picture” thinking and a teen’s perspectiveHow communication styles affect trust, confidence, and openness This episode also sheds light on a powerful truth: sometimes, it’s not what we say—but how and when we say it—that shapes the relationship. Whether you’re a parent trying to better connect with your teen, or a teen who feels misunderstood, this episode offers honest insights, relatable moments, and practical takeaways to help you communicate more effectively—without turning every conversation into a conflict. 🎧 Tune in to Parenting Untapped for real conversations that help families listen better, understand deeper, and grow stronger together.

270: Should I Let My Kid Make In-App Purchases in Video Games?

Loot boxes, in-app purchases, Robux, skins — and a kid who won't stop asking for them. If you're a parent of a tween or teen gamer, you already know this pressure. But are these purchases actually harmful, or are you just out of touch with how gaming works today? In-app purchases are one of the most confusing pressure points for parents of tweens and teens right now. The games are "free to download," but they’re not really free. And when real money turns into Robux or gems, it can disappear fast. In this episode, clinical psychologist and bestselling author Dr. Lisa Damour and Reena Ninan break down exactly what's going on inside these video games, what parents actually need to worry about, and how to set clear, calm limits without turning every gaming session into a fight. 💡 YOU'LL LEARN: - Why "free-to-play" games aren't actually free, and how to explain the business model to your kid in a way that sticks - The difference between cosmetic skins and loot boxes - How virtual currencies like Robux and gems are specifically designed to make spending feel like it's not real money - A simple framework for talking about whose money, how much, and what happens when it runs out - How to stay warm and curious about your kid's gaming life in a way that prioritizes a strong relationship with your kid Gaming isn't the enemy, but clever marketing is baked into these platforms, and your kid needs you to be one step ahead of it. This episode gives you the language and the confidence to do exactly that. ________________ Today's sponsors: Wayfair: Visit https://wayfair.com. EP 20 - Parents Argument

Welcome to another episode of Parenting Untapped! How do parents’ arguments shape a child’s understanding of relationships, communication, and conflict? In this episode of Parenting Untapped, Aly and her father Tony have an open and honest conversation about something many families experience but rarely discuss—parental arguments. Looking back on years of disagreements, they explore how conflict at home can influence a child’s emotions, behavior, and future relationships. Aly shares her perspective growing up around arguments—what she noticed, how it made her feel, and how it shaped her approach to handling conflict today. Tony reflects on how maturity, self-awareness, and emotional control have changed the way he handles disagreements over time. Together, they discuss: Whether arguing in front of kids is harmful or normalThe difference between healthy and unhealthy conflictHow children interpret and react to parental disagreementsThe importance of communication, accountability, and emotional control This episode highlights that conflict isn’t the problem—it’s how it’s handled that truly matters. 🎧 A must-listen for parents and teens looking to build stronger, healthier relationships through better understanding and communication.
