John the Baptist could not and will not be the Light thus, there was/is no confusion as to who John the Baptist was, and he in no way wanted to impersonate that Light. John in the book of John chapter 1 verses 19-23, debunked and cleared any information about who the Pharisees thought him to be; when he was asked if he was the Christ. John the Baptist was confident in his assignment and originality; he never chose to be called the Christ, Elias, or any other Prophet of God; neither did he choose to be called the junior or replacement of one who had lived in the past. John knew that there is only one Christ who is the Lamb and Light of God. Knowing fully well that posing to be the Light of God that is, Christ, will be tantamount to impersonation which will make him a false Christ. Hence, end up destroying both himself and his ministry.
