Rory McIlroy Stories: The Masters Win, Historical Rank, Tiger Woods

Colin is joined by sportswriter & author Alan Shipnuck who just released his newest book “Rory” They start with Rory McIlroy’s evolution and why he became a bit testier and wears his emotions on his sleeve more now that he’s later in his career. They discuss how to best categorize Rory’s career, and Alan explains why it’s been a play with three acts, and that Rory is still in his prime with his best golf likely still ahead of him (4:00). They talk about how Rory’s personal life lands someone in the middle between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, and why Rory is more authentic than both of them and why Tiger & Phil would likely trade their career & life for Rory’s (10:00).  They discuss Rory’s beef with Alan stemming from his lack of control over the narrative of the book and how they eventually resolved it (14:30).  They preview Rory’s chances of repeating at The Masters and what to expect with him now that the pressure of winning the tournament is off his shoulders (20:00).  They revisit Rory’s meteoric rise in his late teens to early twenties, his bouts with homesickness as he traveled the world and how he handled superstardom and a high-profile divorce at a young age (25:00). They also discuss why Rory became the face of the anti-LIV golf movement and why his upbringing contributed to that sense of loyalty to the PGA Tour (29:00). Finally,  they break down why Rory is the most popular non-American golfer at American tournaments (32:30), what made his Masters win last year so unforgettable and whether can achieve his goal of winning 9 majors (36:00).  (Timestamps may vary based on advertisements.) Lakers Injury Disaster, Nuggets vs. Spurs OT Thriller, Michigan vs. UConn Preview, NBA’s Tanking Problem

Colin is joined by Jason Timpf, host of “Hoops Tonight”. They start with LeBron’s comments disparaging playing in Memphis,  and they agree that LeBron is probably onto something if he struck a nerve to this degree and laud him for being authentic (3:00). Colin argues the Lakers game against OKC where Luka Doncic and Austin Reeves got hurt was about as disastrous of a regular season game there has ever been in the month of April, but the criticism of JJ Reddick is overblown (8:15). They believe the Lakers will be one and done in the postseason after losing two of their stars (16:30). They move to the wild overtime game between the Nuggets & Spurs, and they debate whether the Spurs' youth and inexperience will be their Achilles heel in the postseason and Jason highlights the Spurs inability to stop Jokic could be a problem in round 2 (23:45). They pivot to the Final Four and Michigan’s drubbing of Arizona, and Colin argues the Wolverines are one of the best teams in the past decade, but not historically great (29:15). They preview the NCAA Final between Michigan and UConn and predict a very physical game and that Dan Hurley will try to put Michigan’s bigs in the blender to get good looks (35:00).  Finally, they discuss the egregious level of tanking by the worst teams in the NBA and whether there’s anything the league can do to address it (45:00). Prime Cuts - Final Four Preview, Tiger’s Troubles, Elite NBA Draft Class

Colin’s top takes of the week. First, Colin is joined by Doug Gottlieb, men’s basketball coach at University of Wisconsin Green Bay They start by reacting to UConn’s last second win over Duke in the Elite 8 quarterfinals (3:30), break down the Big Ten’s dominance in the tournament  (12:30) and preview a stacked NBA draft class and debate who should be the top 5 lottery picks (16:30) Then he’s joined by Danny Parkins, host of “First Things First” at FS1. They start with Tiger Woods crashing his car in another suspected DUI, and discuss why his value is so high to the PGA and sponsors that they’ll never cut ties with him. They recap Tiger’s history of surgeries and why it’s likely he’s developed a reliance on opioids to deal with chronic pain and that he probably should never be behind the wheel of a car (27:00). They react to the potential of the NFL using replacement referees after contract talks broke down. Colin argues that NFL officials overwhelmingly get calls right and paying full-time officials won’t make the product better, and that the only argument for full-time refs is the NFL has the money. Danny believes HD television with multiple slow-motion replays has been the cause for so much complaining about the refs (33:00).  (Timestamps may vary based on advertisements.)
