Tips to Living a “Normal” Life with Chronic Dizziness

This week, Dr. Abbie Ross, PT, NCS, and Dr. Danielle Tolman, PT sit down with Allison Hirshey to discuss her tips for living with chronic dizziness.

    Allison's Resources:

The Steady Coach (Youtube channel includes link to her free chronic dizziness course)

o   Dr. Yonit Arthur is a board-certified audiologist and certified strength coach who aims to help those suffering with chronic dizziness and other vestibular symptoms

o   The Steady Coach also has a podcast

    https://www.youtube.com/c/thesteadycoach

Conscious Healing - Retrain Your Brain: Overcoming Neural Circuit Dizziness Course

o   Megan suffered with PPPD/MdDS type symptoms for years and has found her way to recovery. She now offers 1:1 coaching and a course she created around healing chronic dizziness

    The Better Mind Center

o   The therapy center I work with, they have a multitude of psychotherapists who are trained in working with patients who suffer from chronic pain and/or chronic dizziness.

o   Massage - specifically Neuromuscular and Craniosacral Therapies

    Books:

The Way Out by Alan Gordon

o   Takes a mind-body approach to healing chronic pain. The book uses the word “pain” but the same approach can be used for dizziness, just insert “dizziness” anytime “pain” is used.

o   There is an audio version as well which is great for those with symptoms that make reading difficult

Victory of Vestibular Migraine by Dr. Shin Beh

o   Extremely informative for those suffering with vestibular migraine but offers take aways to anyone who is suffering with vestibular symptoms

Sound, Vibration, and the Vestibular System with Ian Curthoys

Sound, Vibration, and the Vestibular System with Ian Curthoys

This interview was a treat! Dr. Danielle Tolman, PT and Dr. Abbie Ross, PT, NCS are joined by our listener favorite Jeff Walter, PT, DPT, NCS to talk to Ian Curthoys, Professor Emeritus. This discussion covers different ways sound and vibration can stimulate the vestibular system, and how it can be used for diagnostic purposes at bedside.

If Ian Curthoys' name sounds familiar... it's because it should!
In 1988 Halmagyi and Curthoys introduced a subjective test of semicircular canal function—the head impulse test (HIT)!
Read his original article here: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamaneurology/article-abstract/587833

    His most recent publications:

Pastras, C., Gholami, N., Jennings, S., Zhu, H., Zhou, W., Brown, D., Curthoys, I., Rabbitt, R. (2023). A mathematical model for mechanical activation and compound action potential generation by the utricle in response to sound and vibration. Frontiers in Neurology, 14. [More Information]
Curthoys, I., McGarvie, L., MacDougall, H., Burgess, A., Halmagyi, G., Rey-Martinez, J., Dlugaiczyk, J. (2023). A review of the geometrical basis and the principles underlying the use and interpretation of the video head impulse test (vHIT) in clinical vestibular testing. Frontiers in Neurology, 14. [More Information]
