Dr Great Art! (Sometimes even with a "?"), Art History, Visual Metaphor, and a dash of politics. Through his podcasts and performance-lecture installations, artist and art historian Dr Mark Staff Brandl takes viewers inside visual art, art history, and visual metaphor theory. Entertainingly, yet educationally and aesthetically he presents and discusses stimulating tidbits of knowledge. Brandl stands for an understanding of art in which art historical knowledge and aesthetic pleasure merge into a new artistic experience.

    Episode 84: Podcastthon, Catandog Rescuing Animals Ukraine

    In March, a huge group of podcasters are posting episodes supporting charities of their choice. The action is called PODCASTHON, from 14 March to 20 March 2026. My episode concerns a wonderful project by an excellent former student of mine, Maria Zemchugova Bovkoun and her husband. They rescue dogs and cats in Ukraine, most of whom have been abandoned due to the terrible Putin War. The charity is titled "Catandog."

    Episode 78: Art, Metaphor, and Politics

    My podcast makes a come-back with some slight changes. I will still be talking mostly about art and art history, but will also expand my discussions regularly into visual metaphor, as I did in several recent podcast episodes, based on my recently released philosophy book, A Philosophy of Visual Metaphor in Contemporary Art, from Bloomsbury Press London. I will also be adding a short "pamphlet" section at the end of each with thoughts about recent politics, as they are so prevalent and dangerous now, and especially when they affect art and the artworld.
