EP.06 Sovereign Ceremony

In Episode 06 Jarmbi shares the responsibility required to wield the power to hold sovereignty and the intention to empower ceremony; bringing together all the elements, people, DNA codes and creating the right space in place. Colonisation is not the end of the story. What we see now is that all the bloodlines are here____ so we can allow the story to play out the way it has been or we can take control of the story. We’re not able to change the past but we can own the future and there’s wisdom in this for all of us. Our lands have been cared for by our traditional custodians for 80,000+ years. We move together away from the continuing genocide and colonisation of our peoples. Our sovereignty was never ceded. Sovereignty is responsibility, you can't have one without the other. It is about coming back to Mother. We’ll get the wisdom out of this and we’ll sing the songs, embody the dances and create the stories that go about this time, from colonisation to now. Episode 5 with Aunty Rose Walker

Episode 5 of Custodial Care, Kirilly yarns with Bundjalung woman Aunty Rose Walker about her experiences at the Koori Mail Flood Hub. For many months after the devastating February 2022 floods in Lismore, Aunty Rose volunteered in the free op shop area at the Koori Mail Flood Hub. Here she took on the job of organising and distributing the enormous influx of donations sent to the Koori Mail from all over Australia, in order to help the thousands of people who had lost everything. Through her patience, dedication and thoughtful leadership she became known as the Aunty of the Op Shop. In this interview Aunty Rose describes the feeling of wonder and energy that came with this work, the heartfelt care for the whole community, “black, white and brindle” that emanated out of the Koori Mail Flood Hub, and how things feel as though they can really change for the better when people are able to properly connect and care for each other throughout the whole community.

Iva works for the Fiji Sun Newspaper and has been visiting Australia throughout May and June 2023, attending the DART Centre for Journalism and Trauma Conference in Brisbane and has also been sponsored by the ABC and the Koori Mail to stay on for a few more weeks.
