Luminifoto Silva: La historia de uno de los estudios fotográficos pioneros del Ecuador Recorremos la historia de Joel Silva y la creación de uno de los estudios fotográficos más emblemáticos de Ecuador. Una historia que me toca profundamente, porque también es la historia de mi abuelo y su aporte a la fotografía en Quito, así como a las parroquias de Puéllaro y Perucho. Estas parroquias, ubicadas en la Ruta Escondida, son conocidas por sus paisajes, sus cítricos y por la gente trabajadora del campo: soñadora, creativa y con un profundo amor por el Ecuador. En este episodio también me acompañan dos voces conocedoras del tema. Por un lado, José María León, editor y cronista ecuatoriano, reportero de The New York Times en Ecuador y cofundador del medio digital GK, donde fue director durante dieciséis años. Y también Nicole Moscoso Vergara, cineasta, montajista y fotógrafa documental nacida en Quito. Su trabajo explora el cine independiente, el ensayo visual y la creación audiovisual para medios de comunicación y proyectos de desarrollo. Actualmente es directora audiovisual de GK.Ambos han trabajado de forma minuciosa para retratar Quito en ensayos fotográficos y audiovisuales que buscan preservar la memoria y la identidad. Me alegra profundamente poder traer voces de mi llacta hasta Kirikiriroa (Hamilton), y sumar a nuestra comunidad en Nueva Zelanda con historias y trabajos que aporten a lo colectivo. Luminifoto Silva: The Story of a Pioneer Photography Studio in Ecuador We explore the story of Joel Silva and the creation of one of Ecuador’s most iconic photography studios. This is a story that is deeply personal to me, as it is also the story of my grandfather and his contribution to photography in Quito, as well as in the parishes of Puéllaro and Perucho.These rural communities, located along the Ruta Escondida, are known for their landscapes, citrus production, and for their hardworking, dream-driven people — farmers with a deep love for Ecuador. In this episode, I am also joined by two knowledgeable voices on the subject. On one hand, José María León, Ecuadorian editor and chronicler, reporter for The New York Times in Ecuador, and co-founder of the digital media outlet GK, which he directed for sixteen years. And also Nicole Moscoso Vergara, a filmmaker, editor, and documentary photographer born in Quito, Ecuador. Her work moves between independent cinema, visual essays, and audiovisual creation for media outlets and development projects. She is currently the audiovisual director at GK. Both have worked carefully and in great detail to portray Quito through photographic and audiovisual essays that seek to preserve memory and identity. I am deeply happy to bring voices from my llacta to Kirikiriroa (Hamilton), and to contribute to our community in New Zealand with stories and work that support collective connection and growth.
