High quality investigative journalism

Continually produces excellent stories that are well produced, are based on fact and hold a light up to Australian society. This program is yet another example of the value of the ABC and particularly RN. There are simply no examples in the commercial media that do this kind of reporting. If you want to know some of the back story around the screaming headlines of the Murdoch press and the blithe statements of our media driven LNP government, then this is good listen. Topics are broad ranging, from nuclear power to the plight of the less well off in our society. Each is tackled fairly, and, where there is doubt, or a lack of clarity, due to information being withheld or difficulties regarding confirmation, then that is stated and, in the absence of direct interview, statements aired in their entirety, and without comment. In other words, the listener is left to draw their own conclusions. This is what good media’s role is in a pluralist democracy. It’s a very Australian idea and forms the basis of our societies’ trust in our institutions and our basic understanding of the “fair go”... to use a cliché. I recommend this podcast as a great resource to inform oneself and form your own opinion. The ABC might not be perfect, nothing is, but it is about the best there is in terms of scope and honesty in a brutally competitive environment of ideas profit, and propaganda that is 21st century media. Take the time, it’s worth it - and free!

All Gone Pete Tong..

“All Gone Pete Tong..” lovingly refers to the BBC’s Pete Tong. And means when good times, get out of control.
Unfortunately, that is the predicament of Background Briefing. Once a premier investigative team, exposing corruption, or Australian right-wing extremists. It has succumb to the axe of conservative ideologue. Now producing left of centre mainstream reports.
It is so disappointing to see to a great show, turned to fodder for the masses, who would never be interested!

I hate having to leave the house before 845 on Sunday! (Or 10 including insiders)
