BONUS: Masters of the Air (from Living History)

A special bonus episode from our sister podcast, Living History with Mat McLachlan! To kick off Season 8, Mat is joined by historian John McManus to discuss the new Tom Hanks/Steven Spielberg production Masters of the Air, currently streaming on Apple TV+. Mat and John discuss the history behind the mini-series, and the immense contribution made to victory in the Second World War by the US Army Air Forces. What was is like to take to the skies in a B-17 over Nazi Germany, what psychological effect did the terror of combat have on the young airmen, and should we feel uncomfortable about the human cost of strategic bombing more than eight decades after the war?

Quality podcast

The battlewalk is a fantastic adventure through both World War battlefields. As an avid reader of WW1 battles, I have particularly enjoyed the detail provided by Matt and Pete to understand not just the battle, but it's context at the time. Their descriptions and understanding of military tactics and equipment also makes this a must listen to for anyone wanting to learn more about our sacred battlefields.

Walking through history

Thank youMatt and Pete for taking us on a journey through your wonderful podcasts and feel like I’m there with you in real time! I love your personal accounts of the battlefields there’s so much to learn!! I’ve just found WW1 vets in my family who served on the Western front and can’t wait to walk the fields with you and discover their experiences first hand!! I’ve learnt so much from you both!! Keep up the great work!!

Ypres

I am so pleased you explained why YPRES was so important.
It made sense that the reason war was declared on Germany was the invasion of Belgium. I always wondered why Ypres was not abandoned.
Love this history podcast
Thank you to all concerned.
