Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

In today's episode the group increases their friendship ratings by discussing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Released in 2024, developed and published by Square Enix (Creative Business Unit 1), this continuation from FF7 Remake is a turn based/action RPG is a reimagining of the 1997 classic that brought JRPGs to the West in a big way on the original PlayStation. Continuing right where the story left off on Remake, we have a whole slew of new settings, side quests, and story bits to chomp through with a varied selection of music both new and old to cover all the bases. While most of the music was originally composed for Final Fantasy VII by Nobuo Uematsu, today also features new arrangements and compositions by Shotaro Shima, Mitsuto Suzuki, Kengo Tokusashi, Ryo Furukawa, Yasunori Nishiki, Yoshinori Nakamura, and Miki Hirose. Axiom Verge 2

So we're back with Axiom Verge 2! Today Joshua walks us through this 2021 metroidvania prequel. As with Axiom Verge previous covered here, this game was developed, published, and composed by Thomas Happ. A lot of the similarities end there though as there's a heavy divergence from the heavy synythetic chiptunes with a whole new sound from Happ as Joshua supplies trip hop beats, melodic world music, and the beautiful vocals by Mayssa Karaa lending a bit of spirited life into the mix. A new direction in terms of game and music, it largely remains somehow perfectly aligned with the magic Happ composed before. [Around the 1:00:00 mark we experience a bit of microphone shenanigans for Laura and Chris. Secret of Mana

SNES JRPG royalty comes barreling back to Beeps Bops and Beats as Chris brings us Secret of Mana, a 1994 action-RPG developed and published SquareSoft. Composed by Hiroki Kikuta, this beloved entry in the Mana series was the first to land in the US with its own moniker while enthralling a generation with the promise of high adventure. Ancient sorcerers, flying on dragons, finding legendary weapons, and saving the world from total annihilation. Everything one could ask for in a (mostly) child friend story supported by some of the most evocative and original music available on the SNES in its heyday. Spooky tunes, aggressive boss music, and music full of longing and hope. Really there's something in here for everyone. Developed by Sukeban Games, published by Ysbryd Games, this indie hit is composed by Michael Kelly aka Garoad. In this dystopian visual novel you sling drinks as a bartender trying to make in a crazy world where talking corgis run companies, android pop singers run the entertainment circuits, and Mega Christmas was saved thanks to a wrestling match against Nega Santa... And your boss may be a secret pro-wrestler? We swear it makes slightly more sense with context, but just barely. Either way the music is a smooth ride as its 80s dark-synth, city pop, EDM, and everything in-between soundtrack powers you through another day in Glitch City at the bar lovingly called Vallhalla.
