After retiring from international speedway, Leigh entered the Finke Desert Race, in the Australian outback - “just for fun” - but an uncharacteristic accident changed his life forever.

The man, known as “Guru”, was a powerhouse winger, who played an integral role in the golden era of the Parramatta Eels, winning four premierships and representing NSW on nine occasions, and the Kangaroos eight times. His trademark speed and sheer strength saw him score 110 tries, which included a stint with the Leeds Rhinos…. In February 2008, Eric Grothe was named in the list of Australia's 100 Greatest Players… and in 2008, he was inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame.
