The Hair Therapist

Melissa Alsemgeest

Welcome to The Hair Therapist! I'm your host Mel. The Hair Therapist brings you real life stories from the salon chair and beyond. You will be introduced to guests from different backgrounds and experiences who have the courage to bring awareness to social issues, altering perceptions and changing stigmas. A community of daring individuals ready to transform lives, connected by stories woven from a collective of tapestries.   My life is a testament to one’s ability of the human strength and spirit to expand and rise to a challenge, battling through domestic & family violence, family drug & alcohol addiction, I barely made it through high school.   Starting my hairdressing apprenticeship at 15 was my saviour. With over 3 decades of listening to stories in the salon chair, I have heard it all as the poor man's unpaid, unqualified hair therapist.   My passion project is to use my skills to give back by doing hundreds of haircuts per year on our most vulnerable communities – people struggling and doing it tough. Sometimes it is not about the haircut it is about the meaningful connections through conversations, feeling seen and heard. I encourage my listeners to give back.   These stories are not just about survival; they’re about transforming pain into power and inspiring others to do the same.    @InfectiousBehaviour | Linktree   Hosted on Acast. Everyday Humans. Extraordinary Impact.

Some people volunteer. And then there are people like Cathy Barber. People who weave service so deeply into their lives that it becomes part of who they are.   Today, Mel sits down with a woman whose journey from London to Brisbane is stitched together by generosity, community, and an unwavering belief in showing up for others.   Cathy is a long‑serving volunteer and Branch Coordinator with Rosies – Friends on the Street, an organisation powered by more than 1,500 volunteers who offer connection, friendship, and dignity to those experiencing homelessness, hardship, or isolation. Over her many years with Rosies, Cathy has become a steady, compassionate presence - from late‑night outreach to Schoolies support, from leading teams to offering quiet moments of human connection that often matter more than anything else.   Her story is one of heart-led leadership. It’s about finding purpose in service, building community one conversation at a time, and carrying the spirit of charity that Rosies was founded on. A spirit rooted in friendship, presence, and genuine care.   From her early life in London to her decades in Brisbane, Cathy’s journey is one that warms you from the inside out. This conversation is a celebration of the everyday heroes who make our communities kinder simply by being in them.   Let’s dive in. AHC – The Industry Voice

In this episode, Mel sits down with Fiona Beamish, the CEO of the Australian Hairdressing Council (AHC), and a woman whose career in the hair industry spans more than three decades, four continents, and an unwavering commitment to elevating the people who make this industry what it is.   Fiona’s story begins the way so many powerful industry stories do - on the salon floor, as an apprentice hairdresser driven by creativity, connection, and the practical business instincts that would shape her entire career. That early foundation sparked a journey that took her across Australia, Ireland, the UK, and Asia, where she built a distinguished career in the global hair product sector, led education and training programs, and even owned and operated the national distribution of a UK based hair brand.   Across every chapter, Fiona became known for her ability to identify trends, streamline operations, coach businesses, and design strategic solutions that help hairdressers and salon owners not just survive, but thrive. Her leadership is grounded in a deep belief in community, connection, and the power of professional development - values that feel more essential than ever in a rapidly shifting industry landscape.   Now, as CEO of the AHC, Fiona leads a passionate national community dedicated to supporting, advocating for, and developing strong hairdressers and business owners. She and her team are focused on raising industry standards, strengthening business education, and ensuring that hair professionals have the resources, representation, and support they need to build sustainable, successful careers.   This conversation explores the experiences that shaped her, the lessons she’s carried from the salon floor to the boardroom, and her vision for an industry where creativity and business confidence go hand in hand. It’s a story of evolution, leadership, and a lifelong commitment to the craft and the people behind it. Would You Know If HE Was Struggling?

In Australia, 75% of suicides are men. That’s not a statistic - that’s a wake‑up call. And too often, it starts with the same two words: “I’m fine.”   Stacey MacMillan‑White saw the truth behind that lie. The men in her life weren’t okay, and no one was asking the real questions. So she created The Great Mate Check‑In - a simple, grassroots movement giving men what they’ve been missing: a safe space to speak.   On the first Friday of every month, mates across the country pause, reach out, and have an honest conversation. No fixing. No judgement. Just connection — the kind that can save a life.   In this episode, Stacey joins Mel to unpack why men are struggling in silence, and how one genuine check‑in can change everything. This isn’t just a chat. It’s a call to action.   Ask twice. Stay present. Because one conversation might be the one that keeps your mate here. Check Your Prostate or Die

In this episode, Mel sits down with someone who isn’t just a guest - he’s family. After more than twenty years of friendship, Jamie reached out with something he felt he needed to talk about. What began as a routine annual cholesterol check turned into a moment that changed everything: a completely unexpected prostate cancer diagnosis that arrived without warning, without symptoms, and without the slightest hint that anything was wrong.   Jamie’s story is raw, honest, and deeply human. It’s the kind of story that reminds you how quickly life can pivot, and how the conversations we avoid or delay, can be the ones that save us. What he shares isn’t just about cancer; it’s about paying attention, asking questions, and refusing to assume that “I feel fine” means “I am fine.”   This episode is a call to action. A reminder to check your PSA levels. To talk to your mates, your partners, your dads, your brothers. To stop waiting for the perfect moment to take your health seriously. Jamie’s courage in telling this story isn’t about fear - it’s about empowerment. It’s about giving someone else the chance to catch something early, to change their trajectory, to stay here longer.   If you’ve ever put off a test, ignored a gut feeling, or assumed you were too young or too healthy for something like this, Jamie’s voice is the one you need to hear today. The Brilliance of Human Resilience Part 2

Today’s guest, Andrea Gullick, has lived through moments that reshape a life -nursing her newborn through cancer, becoming widowed at 27, and rebuilding herself from the inside out. Those experiences became the foundation of her work as a speaker, mentor, and wellbeing and culture specialist, helping people understand themselves with honesty, courage, and compassion.   In this conversation, Andrea shares the turning points that shaped her, the emotional intelligence born from grief, and the belief that real strength comes from deep self awareness. It’s a story of loss, rebuilding, and choosing to rise with intention.   And what makes Andrea’s voice so compelling is the way she translates her lived experience into practical, human‑centred wisdom, the kind that shifts how we show up in our relationships, our workplaces, and our own internal worlds. Her story isn’t just inspiring; it’s a reminder of what becomes possible when we stop running from ourselves and start listening inward. The Reality of Boys Mental Health

This episode discusses anxiety, depression, self‑harm, and suicidal thoughts, which may be distressing for some listeners. Today, Mel sits down with Bodie Morris, the Queensland athlete and founder of Alchemy Wears, whose raw honesty online has made him a standout voice for youth mental health. Before he was sharing straight‑up reflections on Instagram and TikTok, Bodie was a teenager fighting a brutal internal battle: crippling anxiety, relentless panic attacks, depression that swallowed whole days, and self‑harm that became a desperate attempt to cope with pain he didn’t know how to name.   On the outside, he was a Queensland representative soccer player. On the inside, he was unravelling. What helped pull him back were the right people in the medical support network who finally saw what he was going through and stepped in before things got worse.   Now, Bodie is using everything he survived to push for better mental‑health support in schools, calling out the gaps that nearly cost him his life and championing early intervention for kids who feel invisible. His insight is sharp, grounded, and shaped by lived experience and this conversation lands exactly where it needs to. Concrete Isn't A Bed - Part 2

Norm grew up knowing that his father had spent his final years homeless on the streets of London - a fact he didn’t fully comprehend as a child, but one that stayed with him as a quiet, defining thread. That early awareness shaped his understanding of how quickly people can fall through the cracks, and it planted the conviction that safety and dignity should never be out of reach for anyone.   Years later, that conviction crystallised when he noticed a near‑empty carpark at night and recognised its untapped potential. That moment sparked the creation of Beddown, the social enterprise he founded in 2018 to transform underutilised carparks into safe, temporary accommodation for people sleeping rough. After several years establishing and growing the initiative, Norm stepped away from Beddown and has since moved into new purpose‑driven work.   Today, Norm channels his energy into Prison Transport Group, where he serves as CEO, focusing on connection, safety, and dignity for families navigating the justice system. His mission has evolved, but the through‑line remains the same: creating practical, compassionate solutions for people who are too often overlooked. His early life didn’t give him grief to carry, it gave him clarity about the kind of change he wanted to make.
